UTSA/Memphis game

UTSA is not great and Memphis' offense is not great. It is just our defense is so bad. With an average defense, we would have beaten Memphis easily. Even Charlotte was holding down Tulane's offense until they tired because their offense is so bad. We may not have the worst defense in the country (close though), but we do have the worst defense in the conference.

Here comes San Antonio.

Let’s do our part and beat down Army next week.

Set up a war between North and South on national tv in less than 2 weeks.

A season ripe with continued opportunities.

41-24 UTSA with 6:53 left in the game. 27 unanswered points.

Even in a down year, it appears UTSA and Coach Traylor will get their signature win vs 7-1 Memphis.

Don't forget, we are their Super Bowl...

This cannot be overstated and it really has little to do with wins and losses.  The defense is so subpar that it no question impacts our opportunities for success.

This may be hard to stomach but Memphis only put up 10 more yards of offense against us compared to versus UTSA. Memphis laid an egg after a hot start vs UTSA. They did the same against us. The difference is UTSA scored 20 straight during Memphis' scoreless stretch. We scored 3. There's your ball game.

10 more yards…and SIXTEEN more points…but don’t let facts get in the way of this continued ridiculous narrative that our offense is the issue.

UTSA put up 44 against Memphis.  We put up…wait for it…44.  But UTSA’s defense gave up 35 points…we surrendered FIFTY TWO.

THAT is “your ballgame.”

Pointing out that the offense isn’t blameless isn’t the same as saying they’re the issue.

Had UNT capitalized on the 5 straight 3-and-outs, the ballgame changes at that time. Consider if UNT had scored 20 points in that stretch like UTSA did, Memphis' gameplan would have changed down 13 at the end of the 3rd. That's how you put pressure on a team which leads to mistakes. The flows of the game change when you're up double digits with a quarter to go. It's never as simple as looking at the final score but you know that.

Edit to add that in summary, when you score matters.

I get what you are saying that the offense could have done more, but damn if I put up 44 points, I expect to win a lot of football games. Unfortunately we don't because our defense is so bad. The offense before the Tulane game was averaging 41 points a game. With a halfway decent defense, that should equate to a lot of wins. There is too much pressure on our offense to score every time we have the ball because our defense cannot stop anyone with a half functioning offense when it counts and this is two years straight. Memphis beat us last year with 46 seconds left and needing a TD. They drove 75 yards and did it because of our inept D and it is still inept. Tulsa and Wyoming were like Brett Vito said "a mirage."

I'm not in any way under the impression that our defense is good. I'm also not going to say the offense has to score every drive. What I will say is we can't throw the defense out there every 2 minutes without scoring any touchdowns and expect the defense to hold up. Memphis had 15 possessions against us. Do we really think we're going to go on the road against a top team in the conference, give them the ball 15 times, and come out of that with a win? Would it really kill the team to  slow the pace a bit and chew some clock? Don't know how reliable teamrankings dot com is but per them, we have the 5th fastest offense in terms of seconds per play. We all see it. They also need to be more consistent. We get so drawn in by the stats that we forgot how often we also go 3-and-out. Against Charlotte, Tulane had 8 possessions, scored 6 times, and missed a field goal. Potentially scoring on 7 of 8 possessions is efficient. Scoring on 7 of 16 possessions like we did against Memphis is not efficient nor is it a sign of consistency.

Here's a stat for you, we have led in time of possession twice this year: against SFA and Wyoming. Per the NCAA website we're 105th in time of possession. That style of play may work against bad teams but against equal or better competiton, you're defense is never going to hold up.

All good information that you stated, but we will have to agree to disagree on this. Against Charlotte, Tulane only had 10 points. They scored all those points in the second half after Charlotte's defense was worn down because there offense was inept. Against us, Tulane had 31 points in our house in the first half. We were already giving up chunk plays on the first drive and that wasn't because the offense was moving too fast. We started the game on defense and they drove right down our throats and continued to do so. We were fooled into believing we got three and outs because Tulane would drop a wide open pass or the QB would just miss a wide open receiver when he had no pressure on him. It wasn't because we stopped them. They actually never really needed to throw. They could have continued to run and would have gotten chunk plays on that alone. It almost felt like they were practicing when they threw just to work on it. Hughes rushed for 117 on 27 carries against Charlotte. He had 195 on 30 carries against us. It is really hard for me to put any blame on the offense when the defense is so so bad. I love defense and am the first to give defenses more praise than offense, but this defense is no help. They are in fact a liability. Texas Tech is the only team to hold us under 35 points this year. If I was told we were going to score 35 points or more in all our games except one before the season started, I would have been ecstatic. The only teams our defense has held under 35 is an FCS team and two really bad FBS teams.

Tulane vs UNT... they started on offense and punted after gaining a grand total of 18 yards so you're wrong there. We then gave them the ball pack at our 44 after losing a yard on our first drive. They proceeded to score their first TD on that 44 yard drive. We also gave them the ball at our 28 and our 11, both of which led to short touchdown drives. If we're really supposed to be mad at a defense that can't hold Tulane scoreless when giving them the ball at our 44, 28, and 11, then we're just looking for reasons to be mad at the defense. That, by the way, is why we lost against Tulane. Two turnovers within our 30 and a 39 yard punt from our 5. It's a shame our top ranked offense couldn't give us some breathing room or take care of the ball when they were backed up. That's what top offenses are supposed to do.

Again, not saying the offense as a whole is an issue but we've got to put our defense in better situations.

I can wholeheartedly agree with this.
