It's not a buyout at this point. We either pay him 3 more months while he's here, or we pay him 3 more months and kick him out. It's net zero regardless of choice.

The benefit is we now have an open role that people can start being recruited and interviewed for.

Exactly.  You worded it better than I did.

I didn't think this was possible or a best practice in the middle of the season? Wild.

not best practice with the family and holistic approach by this staff

And assuming Odom would be the interim, I would hope that would help prevent a max exodus of defensive commitments.

We have 2 LBs, a CB and an Edge player.

Call me insensitive, but if we lose a player who is upset because we're changing coaches who are producing the worst defense in the conference, and one of the worst in football, does that tell us a lot about that young man?

I've been curious about what runs through the heads of all the high school recruits. Are they thinking "wow our defense sucks" or are they excited about the opportunity to make a positive influence?

On the other hand, are the offensive recruits excited to play here and put up big numbers, or are they discouraged by the poor defense that has made the difference in us being 5-3 instead of 7-1?

Wait a minute.  You can't fire an underperforming coordinator with a terrible offense/defense in his first season!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He needs time to get HIS players to run his scheme!

Roof, a veteran playcaller who spent the 2022 and 2023 seasons as Oklahoma's defensive coordinator, was in his first season at UCF under coach Gus Malzahn.

We need to let Caponi go and show that this program has turned the corner on expectations.  This won't happen... but it is what *needs* to happen, and it would send a clear message that our program won't tolerate horrible play.

This wouldn't negatively impact our outcome this year as our defense is already one of the worst in D1, but it would be a wake-up call to the staff and would allow us to start the interview process for our next DC... and give Caponi a head-start finding a better fit for him.

I'm reading that this was year 1 of his second stint.

EM doesn’t have it in him to make these tough calls IMO. We all know the writing is on the wall for Caponi, yet he trots him out there week to week hoping to catch flies with vinegar. The best thing is to replace Caponi with someone else in an interim basis for the rest of the season just to see if something can be jumpstarted. These are real decisions real HCs need to answer. Unfortunately, I think we all know what the answer to this question will be.

Not sure that UCF doing it makes it a best practice.

This is what I’ve seen from quotes. Something like, “I feel like I can help this team right away.”  I’d imagine we’d hope it’s JUCO’s and transfers saying this.  Having 5 true freshman has not hurt too much on offense, but it would certainly not help the defense.

Agree.  Keeping on the same DC and expecting different results is ....you know........

Maybe, just maybe a message like this might start getting the fan base who doesn't support the program to start thinking it's not the same old North Texas and they are changing their ways.
