It's my understanding it'll be the end of his contract, so he simply won't be renewed.

only way Caponi even has a chnace of staying if he switches to more of a 4/3 and manages to hold teams to under 30 pts a game in the last 5 games, to get into the Top 100 defenses.

This and I dislike the poll.  Should we fire him today would be a valid poll.  Not should we fire him at the end of the season.  What if we have a miraculous 180 and become a top 10 defense the second half of the year...but I already voted to fire him.  Guess he's gotta go cause I said so at mid-season.  🙂

The defense is bad.  It's losing us games we should otherwise win.  It's obvious to both the technical football film geeks, the completely unaware Swifty types, and pretty much anyone who just glances at a final score.  No need for a poll.  Something's gotta give.

I would be alright with him gone.  A good follow up would be, draft up a DC replacement wishlist with 5-10 names.  Who is out there that you want and would be feasible for us in Denton?

Going for it on 4th down in our own territory is not helping the defense. Putting them in some no win situations several times when could punt and play field position.  Not all points are on the defense in my opinion.

Maybe if they didn't allow scores on like the first 3 or 4 possesions the offense could be aggressive like this. It's a double edged sword.

It is more than just the defensive scheme. I don't think we went out and got the defensive talent we needed to be successful. The tackling is poor and we don't have enough size and strength on the D-line and at LB.  Part of that is coaching and part is talent evaluation. I agree that we need a different voice and approach on the defensive side of the ball next year.  I fail to see how firing him now would make anything better. Hopefully the young guys will start playing better as they gain experience this year. Again, I think Morris will find a new defensive coordinator next year.

You're right.  kick returns, fumble recoveries, and pick 6's are not on the defense.  Every point that is scored when the defense is on the field, is on the defense.

Yes, there were at least 3 times on Saturday that the defense was put in a bad situation:  bad snap on the punt, going for it on -35ish yard line, the onside kick.

If my defense is a liability, I would try not to put them in difficult situations.

If my defense was as much liability as it is, I would not want them back on the field.  I feel some of the decisions (going on 4th down, on side kick) is an attempt at that, to keep the offense on the field.

The defense has been so poor, what's wrong with firing Caponi now, and trying an interim at DC the rest of the season?  Seriously, could elevating another defensive assistant do any worse than what we have now?

Traditional wisdom is that you can take those type of gambles (going for it on 4th down in your own territory, etc.) if you have a stout defense which you can trust with a short field.

I just don’t see the wisdom in going for it in your territory if it’s more than 4th and 1…maybe 4th and 2 depending on what yard line you’re on.  Even you convert, you’re still 50+ yards away from the end zone.

I also don’t agree when we pass up a chip shot field goal to go for it, and that has nothing to do with the defense.

I think EM is just a gunslinger who has confidence in his offense (his play-calling ability) so he just pushes the pile of money to the center.  Generally, I don’t think it has anything to with the defense, but I think his lack of trust in the defense is why he called the onside kick with over 2 minutes left in the game.

I’ve said all that, but now I’ll add: you could very well be correct.

Is it that simple though? Our offense/special teams gave Memphis the ball at our 18. Our defense held them to a field goal attempt which they missed. The next drive we give them the ball at our 42 after a failed 4th down attempt. I've harped on it but 5 straight 3-and-outs is what our defense did.

We all love to look at yardage. People have pointed at the defense for allowing 526 yards of offense. Meanwhile we put up 653 yards and scored less. Bad offensive execution in key moments is why. What's also interesting is Memphis put up 659 yards on Navy yet lost while Navy had 566 yards. Similar scores too. Yardage isn't everything. I despised the defense last year and the first few weeks of this year. Recently It's been alright. Tackling in space is still bad and we're not forcing turnovers but it's been better. Just need the HC to not be so damn aggressive on offense all the time and put the defense in better situations.
