SMU defeats North Texas, 3-0

DENTON (9/24/04) – The North Texas women’s soccer team had its 16-game home winning streak snapped in a 3-0 loss to the No. 17 SMU Mustangs at the Mean Green Soccer Complex. The defeat is the first loss at home by the Mean Green (5-2) since the 2002 season and only the second loss at home since 1999.

“I thought that the score didn’t reflect how well we played,” said North Texas head coach John Hedlund. “We had our opportunities but what hurt us tonight is we gave up some bad goals and that’s the frustrating part. We can play with them (SMU) but we made too many mistakes and didn’t capitalize on our chances”.

SMU (5-2-1) started the scoring off early with a goal in the fifth minute of play when Erin MacCallum scored on a loose ball in the box to give the Mustangs a 1-0 lead.

North Texas senior Alyssa Carrier had a chance to tie the game in the 41st minute of the first half but her chance sailed wide of the net from 15 yards out.

SMU extended their lead after the break to 2-0 with a goal in the 60th minute of play when Kimberly Bailey scored off a header from a corner kick. The Mean Green had its best chances of the night in the 67th minute of play.

Sophomore forward Kristen Campbell fired a shot from 15 yards out that SMU goalkeeper Amanda Clark deflected over the net. On the ensuing corner kick junior Richelle Magalhaes hit the post and Campbell fired her shot over the net off the rebound.

SMU closed out the scoring in the 74th minute when Krystal Bailey scored to make it 3-0.

Goalkeeper Briana Buchanan made three saves in the first half but took the loss for North Texas. Freshman goalkeeper Kandice Ellis made two saves in the second half.

North Texas returns to action on Sunday, September 26 on the road against the Rice Owls.

SMU dominated. UNT spend practically the whole game chasing their speedy forwards. The midfield looked gassed after 30 min. Truly disappointing.

WHOA WHOA WHOA, what is up with calling the Mean Green out on this one. Seriously, this is a team that has done great things thus far, including knocking off Baylor. They lose to the 17th ranked team in the NATION and you get on them, seriously. Of couse SMU is gonna win this game, they are one of the best in the country. UNT isn't at that point cause they dont have the recruiting power yet, but keep playing the way they do, they might start drawing more great players which they've done lately with Heather Hutyra and Kandice Ellis. Give this team a break.

The freshman class is indeed excellent. Don't forget midfielder Slavonic & defender Weller. It still doesn't mask tha fact that team speed and conditioning could be better and it showed against SMU & (apparently) Rice as well. At least no one's calling for Hedlind's head.

The Houston and SMU games were the only ones I have been able to attend. The Mean Green have played very well this season, and seem destined to become consistently one of the more powerful programs in this region. I think having the new soccer facilty at the former Liberty Christian school will be a major step in that direction. Crowd size could go from hundreds to thousands.
