That is the number of yards we gained and 32 first downs and still got beat.  What does that say about our defense, a lot!  It is bad, real bad!!!

Also says stats like yards are meaningless. Should have a lot more points on the board with that many yards.

Yeah missed a lot of things. Offense was big plays only and missed some drive sustainers that could have helped the scoreboard … and the defense. Had 5 straight 3-and-outs forced and the offense had a chance to get/extend the lead!

So close. Need the same effort from both sides vs Tulane

Defense got like 3 straight 3 and outs and offense did nothing with it.

-2 on turnovers didn't help.

really just -1... the interception was a last second prayer... but agreed that the defense needs to start forcing turnovers...

This is the key. We can talk about how the offense didn't do anything for those drives the defense held, but they scored 2 TDs on their first two plays of the game! I mean, where are those types of plays for the defense? Thats the difference. Its like we want this offense to do even MORE to overcome the deficiencies in the defense.

You will not consistently win games with that type of play.

The other defense thread is a lot of me defending Caponi a bit. Here is this week's morning after where I get into a little more detail about why I am not asking for him to be fired today.

Great write up. I understand that we are who we are and firing Craponi right now mid season won't solve that, but I also don't think we are in a day and age where we have the luxury of developing talent. It's a catch 22, as we don't have the money to lure great players to NT, so what's left? Schemes and coaching for what you do have. I think you pointed out that he did change some things, but it's obviously not working.

Another perspective on this. How do we think that we were about to lure studs on the offensive side of the ball like C4 and DT? Schemes and Morris. They knew they would get a chance to shine. The question is, do the players on the defensive side of the ball really feel the same with this defense?

@BigWillie totally agree on that final point. I don't know how you solve that stuff. I don't know that Morris knows either. I think it is smarter to stay patient and let these guys develop one more year with the same scheme and then make a decision. It's risky, but so is firing a guy and then going through growing pains one more time. Tis why you have to do a great job of hiring right away. Tough gig, but then again Morris is getting paid well to deal with it.

I think this is our biggest issue right now.  We create zero turnovers.

Well, that and no QB pressure.

These two issues are very much related.

Just imagine how many more yards we would have had if we could have stopped them and had a few more possessions. Could have easily topped 800+

They punted 6 times, so it’s not like we never stopped them.

We punter 4 times and had 3 failed 4th down conversions, so the amount of stops was almost identical.  I guess you could argue that the one extra stop they got was the difference in the game.
