Are a LARGE reason why this staff is winning and succeeding

Was the defense bad tonight? Yep! Did the offense stall out on key drives and shoot itself in the foot more than once? You bet! 

Defense allows 27 and gets shredded in the first half, only allows 10 in the second half and the touchdown came as the result of a pick in our own territory.

For all the criticism this defense has gotten, and much of it is valid, Morris (and to an extension Caponi) both deserve their flowers for how they've been able to make in game adjustments and correct things at halftime to keep us in games. Specifically in the 3rd quarter, we have the #1 scoring offense in all of FBS. And our defense ranks 35th in 3rd quarter points allowed. That is NOT insignificant.

It is so easy to be frustrated with our defense's shortcomings. I am not arguing that. But we have to give credit where it is due.

I take back all of the mean things I said about this team and school during the game. The first half was not pretty but glad to see they made adjustments and we got the win. We are 5-1 with three tough games on the horizon. If we can find a way to win against Memphis, Tulane, or Army, there is a chance this teams ends up 9-3 or 8-4. It's been a roller coaster of emotions, but I am enjoying this season.

Just a passionate, but football dumb, fan here:

Morris, in the pregame interview with Dave, said something about having the IPads is really helping with the adjustments being made during the game. Guessing they are better seeing play feeds and making decisions as the game is happening. But hasn't that been a thing for years? Did we just get technology this season, or have we had it and we now have personnel that can react to it?

But, do we?   Yes, they continue to make adjustments.  Credit.   
 

But what about the first half?  Game after game after game.  Is it scouting?   Is it preparation?   Is it scheming?   

We’ve got a bad defense, masked by playing some bad teams.   If there isn’t defensive success in the first half, the next 3 games are going to be rough.  
 

you can celebrate 2nd half adjustments if you want.   But I’m holding out for 4Q of defensive effort because we were prepared going into the game.   Haven’t seen that yet.

This technology was not allowed on the sidelines until this year.

This. Amazing how unprepared the coaches seem for the beginning of the game. I wonder if they script the first couple of series and the other coaches are able to anticipate the calls? Our coaches look lost out there and the same stupid formation penalties keep happening.

Tackling was one of our biggest failures. I don't remember if it was that much better in the second half, maybe it was.

Of course, you can remind them wrap up, etc., and give them a good butt-chewing over it, but I wouldn't call it an "in-game adjustment".

You could say this happened with Tulsa. They held them to 3 points for a majority of that game, Tulsa only got garbage points. 

The only debatable part of that was how good Tulsas offensive is.

This is valid! I am certainly not disagreeing with this. On my podcast with with @BillySee58 I noted that I wanted us to dictate tempo after scoring first and we didn't do that. 

I think the mindset I'm approaching it with is, we were literally working with the worst defense in the country last year. If the next step this year is a pretty bad defense that is succeeding when it comes to "bend but dont break" then I can live with it. Better QBs then Fancher have done less against us this year.

      Eric Morris needs to go

      I am torn on what to do with EM, but I know he needs to go. Many say we need a HC with head coaching experience at the FBS level. I know there are HCs at other FBS programs doing more with less, but would they come to a place where historically it's difficult to win consistently and risk it all if their eye is ultimately on a power conference job? Then if you take a P4 conference former HC, they have most likely been fired and they may not get the mojo back like Tom Herman at FAU or Charlie Strong. So, if that is the case where do we go? Many are saying no FCS HC or no more coordinators who have not been a HC at this level. Again where do we go if not those type of guys? My thought is that you may have to hire that guy that this board has been reluctant to go after. That's the guys who have had issues somewhere else and that's why they are no longer where they are. Lane Kiffin had issues and FAU gave him the chance to resurrect his career. Alabama gave Sarkisian (spelling) a chance to resurrect his career and he is doing good things at Texas. We have tried a lot of things, but we have not tried that route of HCs with some skeletons in their past. I feel that if that coach wins, people will forget about their past. I am sure people at Texas have forgotten about what went down with Sark at USC. Just my opinion because we have been striking out for a long time on HCs.

      I'm not sure what the path is for Cobbs long term. A lot of us would absolutely love to have him in a HC role in Denton, but we want to see him gain HC experience first. Do we take a chance and give him that crown? Do we watch him leave, and possibly not return...ever?
