Too often our guys are in the right position to make a play and they simply don't. For me, our defensive woes are more on the players and not the coaches. We just don't have good players on the field on defense. Plain and simple.

Poor recruiting and poor coaching are two different things, as you just stated. I agree that both are Caponi / Morris responsibilities. But there are factors outside of the coaches that prohibit us from getting good recruits.

Naturally. We just have no playmakers on defense. We are undersized and can't tackle. And we NEVER create turnovers. EVER.

I don't think you understand how point, and counterpoint operate. You're supposed to MAKE your argument, not the other guy's.

You know when you don't have the players with the skills to run the system you're trying to run and don't make changes to try and find something that will work you are either incompetent or..... Sorry that's it just incompetent.

I can see the point you are trying to make. I saw too many times players grabbing an FAU player and they cannot get him on the ground or they get drug for another 5 yards or more. I saw too many times a player diving at an FAU players feet. I feel like the secondary would quit when the FAU QB started to scramble leaving a receiver completely uncovered instead of sticking with them. My point is Caponi cannot make the plays for them so I see your point there, but he and his staff have to do something about getting these guys to get people on the ground and stay with their coverage. It doesn't do any good to get to the ball carrier if you cannot stop them because you can't tackle. I believe the great Vince Lombardi once said "Everybody out there grabbing and nobody tackling."

My point exactly. And like you point out, it seems like every time we do make a play, our opponent somehow gets an extra yard or two out of the play when they shouldn't. We don't bring down guys at the point of attack. In a game of inches, it's even harder on our defense when what should be 3rd and long is now 3rd and 2 or 3 to go.

I will also point out that our defense played a great second half. Only points we allowed because of short fields that our offense / head coach gave them.

I have been saying this since last season, this team can't tackle!  Players are in position to make plays, but the basic fundamentals of hitting a guy low and wrapping him up are not there.  I will give Caponi some credit, very rarely does the defense seem confused, the players know their assignments and are in the position that they need to be in.

I don't know if you can fairly blame the DC for poor tackling, its the position coaches that are supposed to teach the fundamentals, and its the head coach who decides to run tackling drills in practice.

By the time they get here, it’s too late.   You can’t blame the DC for their inability to tackle.   You probably can’t even blame their HS coach.   I’d go back to middle school.  It’s not taught and when they fail at tackling, there are no repercussions.   People want and need instant gratification now.  If the defender can knock someone down by just running into them, the Coach is OK with that because mission accomplished.   Teaching technique, on a broad scale, is a rarity these days.

The 3-3-5 is suppose to confuse the QB and have coverage throughout the field. However, it appeared this is where their QB flourished. He exposed the middle way too often and exposed how soft our coverage was. I don’t know how many times we have to see that this garbage doesn’t work for us. That’s on coaching trying to fit a square peg in a round hole. Our personnel isn’t fit for this defense, yet they continue to sneak it in. We’re the only air raid team in the conference, which this defense is supposedly best against.

FAU had two weeks to game plan for us. They did a good job. We had some missed tackles, but their players ran hard.

We ran 3-3, 3-4, and 4-2 last night.  I think the multiple looks will help us.

Players need to tackle, but some of our shortcomings last night appeared to be out coached.

No. That 3-3 alignment needs to be shitcanned permanently. Thought the Tech game forced that into the dumpster where it belongs. Guess not. Truly can’t believe Morris tolerates it.

Simplify like the previous 2 games with the 3-4. Adding the extra LB is the only way with our personnel.

I love where this thread is going.

As a Police Chief, I simply cannot wait to give a press conference where I say the following:

”Ultimately, it’s not my fault.  I mean, these are adult men and wonen…they should know civil rights and the law by now.  Sure, you could argue that I failed to train or failed to supervise, but shouldn’t their middle school civics teacher have handled that?  By the time they get to me, it’s too late.  I may be the highest paid person in this agency, and yeah I hired these people, but I wrote policy to put them in the right position to succeed…they just failed to execute.  I am certain my name will be removed from any and all litigation…because the buck just doesn’t stop with me.”

You might be proving my point.   It’s not your job to teach them civics.  It’s your job to enforce their correct knowledge of civics.  If they do not have that knowledge, you punish them, in some regard.

If our coaching staff punished everyone that couldn’t tackle, we’d be out of players.  They have no choice but to deal with what they have and spend time on schemes, positioning and reads.  If they can’t tackle, “we’ll do the best we can.”    The coaches and this team are getting by with what they have and finding a way to make it work best they can, which is why we relish a 7-win season and a bowl loss, year after year.
