I never understood why they didn't make sure to keep "East Texas" in the name.  I knew some people who went there through the time of the name change and they still called it "East Texas State."

Sounds familiar!

Does anyone else wonder where we'd be as a school and athletic program if our name became Texas State in 1989 instead of UNT? I was a student when our name changed and the perception back then was that the Texas legislature and University of Texas would never allow a school to become Texas State.

It was still reserved for A&M at the time but after they officially said no, that's when Southwest Texas got the green light.

Once again wrong.
The Texas State University System, founded in 1911, is the first higher education system established in Texas. Created to consolidate the support and management of state teacher colleges, the System has evolved into a network of higher education institutions stretching from the Texas–Louisiana border to the Big Bend region of west Texas. The Texas State University System consists of seven institutions located throughout the state: Lamar University, Sam Houston State University, Sul Ross State University, Texas State University, Lamar Institute of Technology, Lamar State College-Orange, and Lamar State College Port Arthur.

Interesting note - In 2003, some members of the Texas State University System board of regents assumed that other universities in the system would alter their names to fit the school's name template; for example, Sam Houston State University would become Texas State University-Huntsville. But in the intervening years, it became clear that there was little to no appetite for that. Lawmakers even passed a bill to prohibit Sam Houston State University from changing its name since "All of the other schools in our system are named for Texas heroes," Trauth said.
