Someone with the PAC numbers tell me, do they even have enough financial security to impress AAC teams? Or is it an obvious house of cards that no one wants to enter?

This was something...

I will say this, we were ask first, the numbers being presented were way less than what we’re getting now and in the future. The PAC doesn’t even have a media deal yet…that is why we said, “NO”!

At this point, let them go. At this point, they are trying to lock in the 8th school, and hopefully, this crap will stop there. The AAC needs to move forward, add a replacement (JMU ?), and develop a plan to move forward.

The Pac is shaping up the be a high major basketball conference, and Memphis seems to be more of a basketball school.  However it makes less sense for all the other sports.

I don't see Memphis joining as a full member, and then that kinda defeats the purpose. Sending all their olympic sports to the mountains and west coast just isn't feasible.

Outside shot they would make the move with 1-4 more schools, but also hard to imagine that happening when there's no media deal.

If you like your basketball schools on Probation...

The University of Memphis men's basketball team is on probation for three years, ending on September 26, 2025. The probation was the result of an NCAA investigation that found multiple violations, including:
  • Four Level I violations
  • Several Level II violations
  • Five Level III violations
  • Lack of institutional control
  • Head coach responsibility
  • Failure to monitor
  • Providing impermissible benefits to athletes
  • Providing publicity benefits to recruits
  • Failing to cooperate with the investigation

Didn't their head coach recently fire all his assistants? Sounds like a another problem could be coming to light.

Gee, didn't Memphis just sign a letter of commitment to the AAC? What is the world coming too when you can't trust the word of a University.

What letter of commitment?

Was there a signature, or more like a Tweet that said "AGTG, I am 110% Committed.  Thank you to my peers and fellow ADs for giving me this opportunity!"

Perhaps " letter of commitment " is not the appropriate wording. I though the 4 schools offered by the PAC announced something to that effect when they turned down their offer and announced were staying in the AAC.

The PAC already had to take USU, and can't touch UNLV who signed the MW's agreement to stay until 2032. Gonzaga will also get a full share with no football which is 70% of a media deal's value. Outside of San Diego what other large metros can they pitch to networks? This seems like a mess already.

Sacramento has a population of 4 million people and is the 20th DMA in the country. Sac State is putting the full-court press on the PAC 12 for an invite.

The PAC is in  a weird place as I'm sure they don't want to take an FCS school, if your trying to build a premier conference the optics look bad. However there aren't a lot of options out there if they can't get other FBS schools to jump.

I agree. I'd love to see them have to put their PAC pride aside and swallow a very bitter Sac State pill.

Here's to hoping Memphis stays in the AAC so we can all have a good laugh. 🍻

If the PAC really put their pride aside they would fully merge with the MWC and use their war chest of $$ to make it the best G5 conference.
But it’s all about these Conference Commissioner$ wanting to be the top dog instead of what’s best for all.

That's not how conferences work. The commissioner can steer the direction of a conference, throw out ideas, and talk to networks, etc., I'm not saying they are powerless, but it is the members who ultimately vote on things. If they don't like the direction things are going they can tell the commish to come back with something different.

It was said that adding WOSU to the MWC would be a 10% bump in revenue at most. They don't want to go to a conference and only make $5M a year, when they were making $21M a year before. They are doing everything in their power to not be seen as a G team, and they need to differentiate themselves from the rest somehow. That's why they wanted to poach the top of both conferences, they are shooting for that $15M a year to say, "Look, we are still above the rest of these teams." It's hubris.

It's fool's gold to take teams from the MWC and say they are now worth more than they were a week ago.   Adding an unknown FCS moveup like Sac State likewise is just panic buying.

I think someone will jump on SAC STATE and it probably will be the MWC.

With the amount of money recently being thrown at Sac State, they are clearly thinking better than the new MWC.  If they don't get a PAC invite, I wouldn't surprised if a lot of their projected athletics donations dry up.

Checking their athletics website, I just don't see the fascination for Sac State.  Look 1AAish for sure.

Well they are breaking ground on a new 25,000 + stadium, have a reported $50 million in NIL pledges, in the 20th largest media market in USA, and have won the Big Sky championship the past few years. It sure beats either New Mexico State, the Montana and Dakota 1AA programs, and A&M at  Stephenville[ aka the other TSU ]

$50 million in pledges- pledge means money is not in the bank

Won the Big Sky Conference - whoopee!

20th largest media market in USA - how many will have their eyes fixed on Sac State?

ps-  just pulling your leg!

I didn't know there was a Sac State until a week ago.

If that is the best the PAC can do at the end of their shopping list, then they should just merge with the MWC.

I do believe they will try Memphis and maybe Tulane again with more $$ before they resort to inviting an FCS moveup.

I agree, but ESPN reportedly told the PAC that as far as media value Memphis and Tulane didn't move the needle much past Utah State. Also they should have merged with the MWC but with all the  monetary contractual obligations and ill will that ship has probably sailed. All I knew about SAC State until a few weeks ago is that Stanford hired their football coach . It appears that if Hawaii upgrades to the MWC as a full member they would have 8 full sports members and could take a break and see what happens on a go forward basis. Other than the Hornets ,which both conferences seems reluctant to take, the pod casters think like you that the PAC will circle back to the AAC but target fewer teams and offer them more money.

BRB. Gonna go “pledge” $1billion so North Texas can get in the SEC.
