Honey, who died in September 2022, is one of about 2,350 people whose unclaimed bodies have been given to the Fort Worth-based University of North Texas Health Science Center since 2019 under agreements with Dallas and Tarrant counties. Among these, more than 830 bodies were selected by the center for dissection and study. After the medical school and other groups were finished, the bodies were cremated and, in most cases, interred at area cemeteries or scattered at sea. Some had families who were looking for them.

The 10-month investigation found UNT Health Science Center — through its Willed Body Program — repeatedly failed to contact reachable family members before declaring a body unclaimed and using it for medical research. Since 2018, Tarrant County has provided the Health Science Center with dead bodies considered “indigent and unclaimed minor children or adult descendants” in order to save money on burials and cremation.

Our chancellor started that program and you can bet that’s why they have been so quiet, hoping it blows over. We can dream that someday system will be run by a competent person who puts Denton first instead of being an a wannabe politico that is out of their depth. We got our fill of that with Jackson and this guy might actually be worse from those I’ve spoken to.

If true and that is a big IF because I feel the media is dishonest a lot of the time, I am very saddened and ashamed to hear this.

Pretty sure this is true.  Nobody denied it, the program was shut down and a person was fired.

It is sad, regardless, that so many people go unclaimed. Question: I was not able to find it, but who has the legal responsibility to search? It seems it would be the counties, but I'm not sure.
