Our DC also needs to be able to recruit. Apparently, the last regime only recruited DBs and STILL couldn’t run the 3-3-5.

Agreed.  Our former highest paid football assistant was clearly a terrible coach and recruiter as well.  Mosley will be making the next hire.  He has to as Morris is putting his AD job in jeopardy now.

This is my worry of having a younger HC running the show. Do they have the contacts and connections to be able to hire experienced coaches? And, will these experienced potential DCs believe in EM and his style knowing they potentially could be hung out to dry with all the aggressive nature of Morris’s playcalling? Also, will they realize EM could be on the hot seat, so their time could be limited? Lots of things to unpack going to a school constantly underperforming year after year.

That's why we should go after Carthel. He'd be HC in waiting.

I only think Carthel is HC in waiting if Morris gets hired away. If he gets fired then that most likely means they are going to hire someone outside the current coaches and that means Carthel is most likely not retained by the new HC. I am not sure he would walk into a situation where he feels the HC is on the hot seat.

I really think everyone is overthinking it.  Find a defensive leaning high school head coach in the state of Texas near the I-35 & I-45 corridor.  Bring him and another defensive coach from the high school level he respects most.  Because defensive players we have need more one-on-one attention to just be decent.  So the only way to increase that one-on-one time with limited practice time by NCAA rules is more coaching bodies.  I also think that having coaches fresh from the high school ranks are better scouts for targeting talent that can be flipped from offense to defense.

Todd Dodge would like to have a word with you.

Unless Carthel believes he’s got a good shot of becoming the HC in waiting whatever happens to EM. But, getting a hefty pay raise to run a defense could be pretty convincing.

Next question: Is the $ allocated to the recruiters EM spent for worth it? Is it working?

I’m such a believer that EM has to trust this guy. I like that EM seems to really love this job and wants UNT to succeed. His early legacy is pulsing.

For synergy you need belief and energy. I would look at his previous stops and studs along that tree line.  Washington State is doing well. EM seems nicely connected. We have a sweet offer too. We are basically in the ditch right now. You get to coach in the American. You live DFW. There will be good talent available soon.

Jared will be heavily involved.

Tell me this is sarcasm. It's hard to tell online anymore.

So what’s Jared’s football background? Besides interviewing, how would he know the best candidate to hire? EM definitely needs some input since you don’t want to have division on the team when the HC isn’t on board with the DC hire. Then again, EM had his chance. At this stage in his career, he still needs guidance.

For all the decisions after that weather  aided win over UTSA, a 2025 season without 9 regular seasons or a bowl game being the 9th win should get everyone but Patrick Cob fired.  Like others have pointed out, being a DC under a coach on the hot seat is not likely to be a stable position attractive to DCs that are covetted.  So either you bring in a DC with an extended contract as the HC in waiting or you just roll the dice with a less experienced DC.  I don't this can happen, but I would like Zach Orr.  I want to see a 2026 or 2027 with Patrick Cobb and Zach Orr at the helm.  Either one as Head Coach and the other as Assistant HC and coordinator for their side of the ball.  Eric Morris just isn't ready to be a head coach at this level.  If we were still in CUSA or contending with programs like Southern Miss, La Tech,  UTEP, Rice, ULM, South Alabama and Texas State it might be a different story.  In AAC and above coaching, talent elevation is just too good to achieve anything significant with one side of the ball that has NOTHING it does well consistently.  Hell if they could just tackle people aren't walking out early 3rd quarter.

Why in the world would Zach Orr leave a DC position in the NFL for this program?   I don’t care if we we’re the North Texas Fight Zach Orrs playing at Orr Family Field, he’s not making that move.
