Question is, would a DC for a G5 program be more attractive than being a HC for a D-II program? I wonder how much he makes at SFA?

He makes about $260k at SFA, $215k less than Caponi.

I think the G5 DC spot is more attractive. It would put a bigger spotlight on him. I'd imagine G5 coordinator to G5 HC is more common than D2 HC to G5 HC. It could also get him a spot as a P4 coordinator but he's not making a D2 to P4 jump without first going G5. Just needs to get a foot in the FBS world as a DC to open more doors.

Edit to direct the D2 stuff. He's an FCS HC, not D2. I think the point still stands.

Must be an experienced DC or head coach from lower division. Hopefully Morris will have enough confidence in himself to hire an experienced coach and let him run that side of the ball. My personal choice will continue to be Carthel.

My fear is Morris goes with a young inexperienced coach. I hope Mosley puts his foot down on this hire.

I would like to follow the Indiana model of recent success with Cignetti from James Madison. Hire a successful DC that has a winning environment and bring a bunch of his defense with him.

SFA DC or HC would work for me. That SFA defense had some studs on it.

This is a major hire for the program. No more giving GA’s their first opportunity as position coaches. We need a lead dog in the pack since we’re just chasing our tails.

Are they just pulling names out of thin air?  What’s the connection?

Air Force has given up loads of points this year.   Southern MS gives up 30+ points a game.
Cassity and Hemphill are intriguing but would they leave their current situations?  Would Carthel leave a HC position for a DC position?

Maybe, if he wants to be an HC at the FBS level, he might see this as an opportunity to get that chance over his current situation.

This should have been the call last year.   I wonder if anyone reached out.    Being the "highest paid G5 coordinator" should be a reason to consider leaving Nac.

Not to mention sliding into the HC position when the time comes.

It's Mike Craven's list. He could give a shit less about us. Probably just looking at DCs that are going to be on the market soon.

This is my worry of having a younger HC running the show. Do they have the contacts and connections to be able to hire experienced coaches? And, will these experienced potential DCs believe in EM and his style knowing they potentially could be hung out to dry with all the aggressive nature of Morris’s playcalling? Also, will they realize EM could be on the hot seat, so their time could be limited? Lots of things to unpack going to a school constantly underperforming year after year.

Let's go totally gangsta, and make a statement with this hire. Let's send notice that North Texas will not tolerate losing to the likes of UTSA. I think we could get this guy as our next DC..............

Jess Loepp

He is currently in his 3rd season as the Runners Defensive Coordinator. And, UTSA doesn't have enough money to stop us from taking him.

Here’s the article. Not much info.

Ha!  There should be a segment on the Sundays ROF podcast that discusses potential hires. We’ll see if they go into details of the names.

Could get a hefty raise and be “HC in waiting”. It’s worth the call.

What's the appeal of Carthel?

Honest question. I don't follow FCS closely, but it seems like every time a position opens up at UNT people on the board want Carthel to fill it.

I see he won the NCAA Division II championship in 2017 and has an overall record of 89–48 which are both impressive. However, his run at SFA from a W/L perspective looks similar to Seth's at UNT in that he built up the program in a few years, but he seems to be plateauing over the past few years.

I'd love to hear more about what the advocates see in him and why he'd be a good fit for UNT specifically.

Let’s start with Odom as our interim DC. I heard he was also interim DC for USC not long ago? Anyone know what’s his story?

NVM. Just found a thread of it

We will need to connect some dots for a potential new DC hire (assuming the interim doesn't get it).

First, Caponi had no apparent Texas connections.  He was a career defensive asst position coach at several schools, and lastly a CB coach at Iowa State, before being elevated to DC at UNT.

He did have some DC time at a Dlll school in 2008-10, but nothing since.   Was he elevated too fast?

Does Morris have a short-list already?   Probably.  It's not like everyone didn't know there needed to be a change in DC for some time coming.

Here are some starting criteria:

-The new DC "should" have previous FCS or FBS DC experience...so a repeat learning-curve doesn't happen.

-Texas ties for recruiting would be bonus points.

-For a quick hire, I expect it to be someone Morris is already familiar with, no interview needed, only $ negotiated.

-Are 2-year contracts a thing for Coordinators in FBS?  If not, One-year only please, until we establish confidence.

So, with all that in mind:

-Find some FCS DCs that Morris worked with somewhere else.

-A DC on an FBS staff where the HC has already been fired, or soon will be, but they had a good Defense! (a new HC will bring his own staff in).

-A former head coach that has been recently recycled back thru DC to try again.

Morris should not be allowed to interview for the DC position.  We need to have someone who understands the defense to ask the right question.  Could we ask Orr to do the interviews for us?

Absolutely agree.  Morris made a terrible decision in the last hire, paying him WAY more than he deserved. Mosley should require full sign off on all candidates and he will.

Our DC also needs to be able to recruit. Apparently, the last regime only recruited DBs and STILL couldn’t run the 3-3-5.
