I’d like to see a defense-first minded head coach.  We may not win many P4 games, but like Corky, Dickey and McCarney we’ll play well on the road most times and vie for a conference championship now and then.

Since Dodge I’ve completely had it with the Chunk & Duck-minded guys.

It’s defense first or nothing!

Rick

Seems we continue to have athletic directors who get mesmerized by the thought of powerful offensives bringing in crowds. Playing good football and winning will increase it attendance. Need to stop saying our goal for #Hit6

This is such a North Texas overreaction. That’s what led to McCarney, and what led to Littrell. Thinking that a coach who had failed by the end needed to be replaced by the polar opposite type of coach.

However, these offensive-minded coaches need an AD who can push back on short-sighted DC hires. Both Morris and Littrell said they made their DC hires based on defenses that they felt were hard to score against. Obviously Dodge hired HS coaches because he thought a good coach would be a good coach at any level.

These were all incredibly short-sighted lines of thinking, just like this post saying we need a defensive HC. Hire good coaches, and make sure they know what to look for in hiring the coordinator on the other side of the ball from where they coach. Beyond just “oh this coach was hard to coach against.”

The greatest success that we've had in NT sports....in the last 10 years....was brought to us by Grant McCasland.

And if you can't learn from that....that "Defense Wins Championships".....you never will.

Unfortunately, that apparently doesn’t bring in butts in seats…but I agree with you. I like winning ugly a lot more than losing

Maybe we should go with a co-head coach and have one for offense and one for defense😂

Well, we had that choice when the Morris hire took place. We could have hired ANOTHER west Texas boy and gotten BOTH DEFENCE AND OFFENSE. When Cody Carthel was assistant coach for his dad at WT A&M they ran a Dodge-like offense.

We saw how Cody Carthel can coach defense a week ago. When he was at Commerce, he coached a (D-2) all-American QB.

Rick V. Set a standard that I think was a good one.  Only hire a head coach that has head coaching experience.  With the excepting of Dan McCarney and possibly Incarnate Word, we haven’t stuck with that formula.  Next time, hire a head coach.  Not an “up and comer.”

I guess we're ignoring the Todd Dodge hire, or are you considering any experience at HC acceptable?

The last guy to vie for conference championships was fired after getting to one.

The problem with an offense being run that FFR  prefers to complement a defensive approach is that in Texas, 99% of our high schools run spread offenses. That’s what killed McCarney. He wanted this bus driver offense and couldn’t find any QB after Derek Thompson left that had any ability to play the position, so we got stuck with complete spares for his last few seasons. He couldn’t find a non-spread QB to run his offense. And that’s always gonna be my fear in going back to that style over the spread, which I agree, is just not real fun to run when you’re getting murdeted. It makes the scores much worse.

I am just curious if you are somehow advocating that Seth should have been kept on as the HC.

But just because you want to run a wide-open offense does not mean you cannot have a good defense. With Morris, it is still to be seen if he seriously considers defense a top priority. As of this point, nothing he's done has shown that he does.

I agree with you…but part of the problem with spread offenses is that their teams rarely hit hard in practice…gotta keep those receivers and QBs healthy. Which is why their defenses look weak. Think Big 12 teams over the years against SEC or ACC teams. Physicality wins every time.

I am advocating for not making a change just for the sake of change.

I think we should fire someone when we know we can get someone we want.

My impression of how Seth firing went down was he was given an ultimatum, fired, and then, and only then, did we start answering or making phone calls to gauge interest. I feel like its just a recipe for getting meh.

We need a competent DC. Doesn’t matter if the HC is from the offense or defense previously.

Good point. Not sure if we didn't get caught up in the case of an inexperienced head coach candidate who really good at interviewing and a selection committee that maybe did not For whatever reason dig deeper. Look, I am by no means an expert, but either way, if I had an inexperienced candidate come in who was a standout on either side of the ball, I would hope that I would insist that they hire a coordinator for the side they are not going to cover who is experienced. I mean, no disrespect to Eric Morris, but I don't think we needed him so bad that he could have said if you don't agree with everything I want to do, I won't be coming on board.

We had Phil Bennett for a time. He's not a guy I would call incompetent.

Only at North Texas would we have moronic fans defend getting our asses handed to us 66-21, and it wasn’t that close, during an early regional tv game.

I don’t care what defense he runs as long as he can recruit to that system - and more importantly adjust to the available personnel. Caponi wasn’t able to do that. Nor can he coach a defense. He is a position coach.

Met some classy Tech fans at the bar, they even bought me a round of shots. But I have never been so mad at UNT football right now
