UNT Soccer: Mean Green Shutout Florida Atlantic in Conference Opener

Recommended Posts

DENTON – The UNT soccer team opened its conference play with a 1-0 home victory over Florida Atlantic Thursday night to earn three points in the league standings.

The Mean Green (5-2-1) got an early 11th-minute goal from sophomore Alexis Miller to open the scoring and put her side up. The Owls (0-5-2) peppered Mean Green keeper Maddie Ogden throughout the night and put six shots on target but the senior was unphased as she led the North Texas defense to its fifth overall shutout win and third in a row. The win also extends UNT’s unbeaten streak to six in a row.

“I’m proud of our team getting the shutout tonight,” said head coach John Hedlund who earned his 398th career victory with Thursday’s result. “It took a team effort defensively to get the clean sheet and Alexis (Miller) came up with the game winner in the first half against a very solid well coached FAU team.”

Miller’s goal was her second of the season and the third of her career. After receiving the pass from freshman defensive midfielder Beya Rosales, Miller turned and found herself near the top of the 18-yard box with space. She took a couple touches forward and fired her shot to the left as she beat the Owls’ keeper.

Rosales and sophomore Mia Bernard assisted on the goal. It’s Bernard’s fifth assist of the season, which is more than any UNT player had all of last year.

Rosales was one of five freshmen to start for the Mean Green on Thursday. Eight of their 11 starters were sophomores and freshmen.

UNT only used three substitutes in the 1-0 win. No defensive players were subbed out over the 90-minute match. Rosales along with fellow freshmen Ella Bushko and Emma King played the entire match along with sophomore Lily Cunningham and junior Abi Major.

The Mean Green are back in action on Sunday for their final non-conference match of the 2024 season as they travel to Abilene Christian. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. CT. The match will be broadcast on ESPN+.

11 shots with only 1 on goal.

I watched the game and felt like we controlled the match for the most part.  We just have to finish our chances.

Definitely! Love the win and there is a history between the two schools battling for championships from CUSA…but the game could have been 2 or 3-0 at the half with the chances we had on their goal! Good win though!

give team credit on a nice win to start conference, but at some point they have to get more goals off their shots. To many close games.

team then goes out and ties a much weaker  ACU team with not goals

"A disappointing result for us considering we should have been up 3-0 at the half," said head coach John Hedlund. "I've never seen three shots saved off their goal line by defenders. Sunday games are never easy especially on the road, running in the heat and playing one of your conference rivals in a physical battle just on the prior Thursday. Good news is we didn't lose today and our defense played great once again but it would be nice if our offense could match our defensive consistent play, if that happens no telling how far this team can go this year."  per MGS Site

Seems to be a running theme with Hedlund teams.

Then OMG, we only had 2 days off to travel 2.5 hrs for our next game

The football team just laid a top-5 all-time embarrassing loss... but let me come over here and crap on the soccer ladies because they tied someone.

I watched the game and Hedlund is correct.  If we had finished our chances, we would have been up 3-0 at the half.  These girls are good, but they need to find a way to finish their offensive chances.  We are extremely young and tend to rush/panic a little around the goal.
