Then why not stay put?

Because from top to bottom the Pac 12 offers opponents of interest. Kick out weaklings Rice and Tulsa, and then your interdivision opponents like SDSU, Boise, Gonzaga, Fresno, Wazzou, OSU all garner more attention than UAB, FAU, Charlotte...

I can't find this actual tweet.  Great screen grab to capture it, but if McMurphy deleted it then I think he is reading the room and holding off until he sees more substance.

Why would Cal and Stanford take something like an 80% revenue cut to go to a non-P4 league. That's bananas.

Why would SMU give up nine years of tv revenue to get into a conference that is barely P5 and has the two most noteworthy members ( Clemson & FSU) trying to leave? They have sure not upgraded their ooc schedule by playing Houston Christian and East Texas A& M

Sorry, I'll have to respond in detail in a few weeks. I'm a little busy counting our ancillary non-tier I media revenue that still far exceeds our total AAC revenue, and planning where to park for our multiple sellouts, and best fent-free nose candy source for our likely homecoming game vs Miami.

Think Brett deleted this when realized the tweet was aggregated from a small podcast that was giving their "projection" based on rumors.

With the ACC news this week, looks like the American is safe for now. The PAC-12 is not getting a media deal any better than the American, and apparently multiple networks have already passed on the Pac.

Knowing this now, this my current preferred path for the AAC:

  • Add Texas State and James Madison as all-sport members. This gets your football league to 16 members. Separate into divisions. There's an easy path to stay at eight conference games or go to nine.
  • Add VCU and Dayton as non-football members. This gets your basketball league to 18 members. You can play one rival twice, and everyone else once.
  • Give programs 10-15 year deadlines to upgrade/build new facilities that are lacking - looking at UTSA, Rice, and FAU's high school gyms.

So watching BIG WEST podcast today and and a guest speaker brought up the point that so far the PAC has repeated their previous mistake of being a west coast only conference, this time with schools with far less media value that those who left for the BIG 10 and ACC. Being locked into the western time zone severely limits both the PAC and MWC attractiveness to potential media partners. He stated that getting into Texas was a must for both conferences [UTEP doesn't count because of its isolation ] and that their targets should be UTSA ,Texas State , North Texas , and that it was a must for them to be in Northern Texas because of the huge market. The bottom line was that for either conference to survive they must get in other time zones adding football only schools if necessary as the MWC did with NIU. I am just the messenger but don't see how UTSA and UNT can come up with the $25 million AAC buyout.

So today the BIG WEST podcast said that UTSA, USF, Memphis, and Tulane were offered membership to the PAC but all got together, reviewed the offer, and turned it down. They said USF,Memphis, and Tulane are looking East , not West, and biding their time. The podcast said that Texas State should happen to get the conference to 8 football programs and the next logical addition is North Texas. If UNT doesn't happen then they will go forward with 8 programs and keep Sac State in their back pocket for football only . UNLV is off the list as they just gave their media rights to the MVC from 2025 thru 2032 and can't afford to buy them back or pay the penalty for leaving the conference.

maybe we should have joined if we would get a full share of the revenue.

If the post above yours is accurate then the media deal is too low to make a move, otherwise Tulane and Memphis would have made the jump. The added travel expense, media partner, lower population density, later start times, etc. all had to be overcome with enough money to justify the move.

I've heard a couple west coast podcasters say Memphis, Tulane, and USF all want to wait for a more Eastern based conference promotion, like ACC or Big 12.   They don't want their media Grant of Rights held hostage in the Pac. Texas schools (UTSA, UNT, Texas State) would be their next focus.

Plus, an insider media expert said there would not be any more revenue offered for any single G5 addition over another, meaning they just want to fill the time slot and team names are not important.

The PAC seems to believe they will be the premier G5 conference in 2026 with their Top 5-6 starting lineup.   They expect to get the next 3/5 CFP auto bids.

If true about no additional money I expect them to go with the cheapest option in TxSt and call it a day. No reason to add more schools if it doesn't add to your revenue.

Their problem will be having only 1 CST team and being on the CW is going to relegate them to an afterthought. B1G, Big12, and ACC now all have late night content that they can put on ABC, ESPN, Fox, NBC, and CBS.

Pretty interesting to think.  I was under the recent impression that they were prioritizing to become a basketball power.

They didn't think another G5 in football could match Oregon St, Wash St, Boise, Fresno, and SDSU as their Top 5.   Could the AAC or SBC?   Army, Navy, Memphis, Tulane, USF/UTSA was pretty stout for the AAC this past season.
