And then they can meet a third time in the PAC championship game? 😜

Actually,  I have no problem with it.

Today's (1/14/25) BIG MOUNTAIN Podcast says PACis  in serious negotiations with Texas St. becoming their 8th all sports member. The podcast says that the PAC wants to get to 9 or 10 full time members and that UTSA and UNT would be top candidates with Eagles getting the edge because of their basketball program. Left unsaid was that Texas St. and UTSA are basically in the same media market.

Go West young man - it worked out for TCU.  The revitalized PAC, top to bottom, is a strong conference (stronger than the AAC) and will regularly be a multi-bid conference in the NCAA tournament.  We should be pursuing membership IMHO.  If Texas State and/or UTSA gets a nod and we don't it will be a colossal mistake.

Who are these Eagles you speak of?  Every time I hear that reference now I think back to our 1-AA days with Corky Nelson.

Seriously, the PAC would have to be an opportunity we at least heavily explore.  I don't know how the PAC is offering invites without any confirmed media deal.   The chance to play Boise, Gonzaga, SDSU, Wash St, and Oregon St would be interesting.

I grew up with "Eagles" and have never liked " Mean Green ", because we are not mean [look at our football record ] and not green [ we have an underfunded athletic department.] I agree with lack of media contracts as a deal breaker but don't know if we would want the travel required for all sports anyway. The BIG MOUNTAIN WEST podcast brought the subject up stating that the PAC and Texas State were in serious discussions and if they came then UNT or UTSA would be their next logical target so you may want to watch it. I don't have an opinion as I am really surprised that NIU joined the MWC for football only. According to the MAC bylaws you must have all your programs in the conference in order to be a member. Unless they change them then NIL's best option appears to be the MVC for all other sports but who knows.

Just as I like to use "North Texas" as our name and never "UNT".

But there are hundreds of teams with Eagles as a mascot.  Mean Green is unique and ours alone (marketing opportunity).

..........................

As for the PAC and revenue I found this article that mentions the PAC-2 gained $50 mil from the Rose Bowl this year and will get another $50 mil next year...

"However, to add a bit more salt to Oregon's wound, a couple of former conference foes are receiving a big payday from the Rose Bowl. As revealed in a report by college football insider Jon Wilner of the Mercury News, both Oregon State and Washington State will pocket $50 million due to the prestigious bowl's contractual obligations with the Pac-12."

I don't disagree with marketing aspects of Mean Green, and you are right. Counting Texas high high schools there is an Eagle at every turn.

I'd like to think that the Univ of North Texas has been around much longer than the Texas high schools using the "Eagle" as their mascot/sports name.  They are copying us.

We have been the Eagles longer than the Philadelphia Eagles.  I don't see them looking for an alternate name to avoid "copycat" accusations.
