I was a freshman in 1961 when we changed our name from NTSC to NTSU.We did try to go to " Texas State but UT quickly killed that. Also, if memory serves, we were given the opportunity to join the UT system but turned it down.

Your memory is off.  UT didn't want us being known as the University of North Texas.

Those old deranged state senators from the University of South Texas are proprietary about their name. I guess they got distracted by A&M long enough to let our name change sneak through.

Texas State was always reserved for A&M in case they ever wanted it. Once the Aggies were clear they would never change their name, SWT got the greenlight.

He's right. I don't write that very often, but he's right!

When will the North Texas Normal College T-Shirts be available?

The irony that it used to be called “Normal College.”

“North Texas” has and will always be part of our name. There is nothing small-time about North Texas. It represents a very big area.
No one questions the name “Southern California” either.

The Flying Worm is unique and special just like the name Mean Green.

The University of North Texas Mean Green with the Flying Worm logo sets us apart and is easily identifiable. It is a strong brand.

Unfortunately we are more Northern Iowa than USC ☹️

Normal Colleges were teacher training colleges.  It was lawless out west in the mid-late 1800's.  The Government thought an educated population was more likely to become a law-abiding population.

Many "State" schools started as Normal schools, such as Arizona State, San Jose State, East Texas State, West Texas State, etc.

Some "State" schools started as A&M schools, Ag and Mechanical schools.  Some of these also changed names like Oklahoma State.

"A normal college, also known as a normal school, was a school that trained people to become teachers for public schools. The term "normal" comes from the focus on teaching norms, or rules."

I know.  I was making a (bad) joke regarding the number of “eccentric” students at UNT.

I just remember that the Chair of the University of Texas,[their old basketball arena was named after him]said that there would never be a  " Texas State University " as long as he was alive. He didn't want any confusion, like the University of North Carolina and North Carolina State, etc. I don't remember any effort by them to stop us from becoming UNT but will defer to those with sharper memories. However I was surprised how easily the change from Southwest Texas State to Texas State seemed to occur. Also hind site being 20/20 we probably would of had more resources if, given the opportunity,[which I think we were] had become The University of Texas at Denton. Just an old man's opinion.
