To begin the team’s season, North Texas football (1-0) defeated South Alabama (0-1) 52-38 in an offensive shootout after trailing 14-19 by halftime.

The catalyst for their second-half victory was the following third quarter, where the Mean Green outscored South Alabama 28-7 to take a 42-32 lead. By the end of the game, North Texas defeated the 68 Ventures Bowl winner 52-38, a stark comparison to last season’s 58-21 loss to the University of California.

With 77 new players total, including starters, head coach Eric Morris said he values any early momentum kicking off their season.

“For us to go out there and compete together for the first time with so many young guys, so many transfers [...] I think to get a little momentum right off the jump is important for us,” Eric Morris said.

While the Mean Green fell into a five point deficit by the end of the first half, the team started out strong scoring on an initial 79 yard drive.

At the 2-yard line, junior quarterback Chandler Morris faked the handoff on a read option and ran into the endzone to score the team’s first touchdown.

Although the drive was capped off by the quarterback’s legs, it was his arm sustaining most of their drives.

Chandler Morris ended his night with a 78 percent completion, hitting 32 of his 41 passing attempts for 415 yards and three touchdowns. His 32 completions ended up in 10 different receivers’ hands, to which Eric Morris credited the quarterback’s poise and the offense’s protection.

“Chandler did a phenomenal job of going through his progressions,” Eric Morris said. “When we protect like that, it allows you to do it.”
