Major Applewhite downplays return to head-coaching role in South Alabama opener

South Alabama is Major Applewhite’s second go-round as a college head football coach, and first since the 2018 Armed Forces Bowl loss to Army ended his second and final season at Houston.

Applewhite and the Jaguars host North Texas at Hancock Whitney Stadium for their 2024 season-opener on Saturday. South Alabama’s offensive coordinator the last three seasons, he took over in January after Kane Wommack left to become defensive coordinator at Alabama.

Asked Monday about returning to the head-coaching role, Applewhite downplayed the significance. He did, however, admit to being “anxious” about his team’s first on-field test of the season.

“I’m no different than anybody else,” Applewhite said. “It’s just like a big day at work. You have anxiety, you have excitement. There’s things that you’re concerned about that you’re not sure if you’re gonna see or not see.
