"It's not something that's just unique to North Texas. It feels personal and as a fanbase, it is a difficult time, can't shy away from that," Hodge said. "How rapidly college athletics has changed in the last two years, really. It is tough, but we're certainly not alone."

Hodge pointed out that North Texas is one of many teams dealing with talent leaving for the transfer portal. Out of the 15 players chosen for last season's AAC First, Second, and Third Teams, only one player is still in the conference. This player is Memphis guard PJ Haggerty, who transferred to the Tigers after a successful freshman year at Tulsa.
