Lifer the one thing those stadiums all share when it comes to soccer is grass. There's a few MLS teams that have no choice, or the climate benefits not using grass (Toronto), but when it comes to the national soccer teams they will not play on turf unless they have to. If it's a qualifier or friendly you're competing directly against a stadium 20 minutes down the road built specifically for soccer in a stadium they know fans will travel to. If they want a crowd bigger than 20k then the options become the Cotton Bowl or Jerryworld, especially for Mexico matches. I also wonder if some of the brick walls make it so that taking a corner kick would be problematic as well, but I'm not certain how the sizing translates.

Probably not wrong that some concerts could be hosted here, for sure.

I don't see why we couldn't reach out to F.C. Dallas for a match at Apogee.

The turf and the contract FCD signed with Frisco keeps every match in Toyota Stadium, it's fairly ironclad. I used to ask why we couldn't do a special state fair match back in the Cotton Bowl and the wording of the contract basically spells it out.

I listed the U.S. Teams only.  I don't care about FC Dallas or the Arlington Renegades.  FC Dallas isn't leaving Frisco for DATCU and nobody cares about the Arlington Renegades.

How about the other ideas?

Get the Dallas Stars and host a "winter classic" game outside in January or February.

Hell, at this point anything is better than what they are doing which is nothing.

I'm not in a position to know, but that's how it's been explained to me for FCD. As for the Renegades, they may have something kinda similar: they're using what's otherwise a white elephant that Arlington might? still be paying for. I bet they have deeply discounted or free rent for the place. Dallas just did that for 3 years for the new women's soccer team that'll play in the Cotton Bowl.

Winter classic was played at Cotton Bowl in 2020 with a sold out capacity of 85,630

Great.  Add a second one and sell it out to 32,000

Huh?

Either way, this thread is a snapshot of UNT.  Hey, let's try this and people come out of the woodwork to think of why things won't work.  Guess it is just a trend.  Do away with the Homecoming parade, no fireworks 4th of July, etc...  We were told that the new stadium would be used to host events and it doesn't.  We have a 10,000 seat venue and a 30,000 seat venue that sit empty 90% of the time.  A&M hosted two events and raised $6 million dollars.  Keeping thinking small and you'll continue to stay small.

Winter classic in Dallas at the Cotton Bowl had almost 86,000 in attendance, Apogee couldn't host that event.

Our Athletic department is either

1. Too Lazy

2. Too Cheap

3. No passion

What would be the incentive for those teams coming to DATCU?

After all the input costs, how could this possibly be a revenue raiser? I think you are pretty much stuck hosting concerts and maybe 7 on 7, select flag football tournaments.

Reach an untapped college audience. Market their team to potential long term fans. Also just cool to interact more with their community (Frisco and Arlington is close enough!)

I have no idea what goes in to getting events at a location, but I have to think location is a hindrance.  If an artist has a chance to play at Starplex (or whatever it’s called now) or DATCU, where will they choose?  People talk about our location as being a positive, but I think it’s our biggest negative on several levels.

That being said, I do agree that our facilities seem to sit idle way too much.

Edit to add that I love the idea of a UNT alum concert.  The mixing of genres might be an issue, but I think it would be an awesome event.  Something I’d definitely go to see.

Probably right.  I have just been throwing out ideas.  As big of a music community as Denton is, concerts are probably our best bet.  Hell, put together another wrasslin' event.  Just scattershootin' trying to think outside the normal box.

I hear you. All in favor of concerts and wrasslin’.

All of these are correct, and unfortunately none of these are new issues.
