You do realize that our official depth charts last season had 12 starters on offense, right?

According to Brett V....one of the camp surprises has been walk-on QB Drew Mastemaker (Austin Vandergrift).

“Drew came in as a walk-on and continues to earn more reps with the twos,” Morris said of UNTs backups. “He has a really live arm and is picking it up fast.” (from the D-RC)

Can’t believe he didn’t earn a scholarship somewhere.

if nothing else, assuming these numbers are accurate... at least we have more size this year

Wonder if there’s enough size to win a championship?

Great job on the depth chart…I think you’re going to be surprised with the freshmen running backs, they have game and one of them will probably start by game 3…I don’t know how good we’re going to be this year, but I believe we may be better than most think! I’m predicting an 8-4 season. Coach has learned his lessons the hard way last year; for example, they’re on the one foot line at Navy early in the game and he goes for it on 4th and one??? We should have won that game, always go for the points!

There is no mention of his QB experience in HS in this bio. Just punter and safety.

Drew Mestemaker - Football - University of North Texas Athletics (meangreensports.com)

HS Stats

Played in 11 Games, 10-17 passing with 146 yards and 2 TDs. Crazy he was a backup in HS and getting playing time with the 2s here.

I remember a career backup that ended up something like a 5th round draft pick and won a record number of Super Bowls.

Tom Brady wasn’t the backup on his high school football team.

And he backed up future NFL starter Brian Griese as a freshman and sophomore in college before starting the majority of games his junior and senior seasons. So not exactly a career backup.

If Mestemaker was the backup on his high school team and becomes the backup for us as a true freshman then that is absolutely incredible.

As a UNT football fan, I find that very scary, but it could be that his high school coach was an idiot or maybe the guy in front of him on the HS depth chart was insanely good. Someone was Caleb Williams’ and Jaden Daniels’ backup in high school too.

Jason Bean and Chandler Rogers split time at Mansfield Lake Ridge High School… but that was more of an even timeshare.

This reminds me of a little heralded QB out of Broken Bow Oklahoma who reported to fall camp, moved up the depth chart and became a starter halfway through game one. Another diamond in the rough, perhaps?

I like how you completely botched where Fine came from but then flip it on GMG_Dallas and make it seem like they’re the person who did something wrong or uncouth. Football season is so back!

I'm just glad he got the home state and player name spelled correctly. Could have been Masen Phine of Arkansas.

Seriously though, Locust Grove was such a big part of Fine's story I'm surprised it's already been forgotten. Way to remember one of our most important players from the past decade.

If you boys were playing a football game, you'd be penalized for piling on. Hope you feel better and I'll be more careful about peeing in your Wheaties.

You guys are pathetic. And BTW, I stand corrected.

What’s the “or” for?  I guess Asenuga has really shown the coaches that he can play!   Hope Blair is okay and its not an injury concern.

I think Gabe was one of those hampered by something but not season-ending.
