Winner: Boosters and fan pocketbooks

Athletic departments are still going to need boosters to make big-money contributions, arguably now more than ever as their budgets are squeezed amid a decrease in NCAA distributions and the advent of revenue-sharing. But the boosters and casual fans won't be so directly needed to fund talent acquisition. The term "booster fatigue" has become common in the college sports lexicon. Now, the primary onus for paying the players will be on the athletic departments. That takes financial pressure off supporters, who are already shelling out for seat licenses, season tickets, travel, merchandise, parking, concessions, cable packages and all the other expenses that come with being a college sports fan.

Also looking like by moving the collectives back into the athletic department they can regain the tac benefit:

“There is, however, another incentive to drive donors to give to schools now that the universities can pay players directly: Their donations are subject to tax deductions, unlike those to a collective.”

Well looks like everything is moving back to the AD and University like it was before.  UNT will have to have some steep budget cuts if they  are spending 20-30 of their budget to athletes.  probably will have to drop some sports as well.  Sad!

Just asking, but will UNT even be able to afford a football program?

I’d imagine it will eventually get demoted to something that resembles true college football as we knew it. Scholarships only, maybe a stipend, but playing in purely regional games to bolster attendance since TV wont pay much for the non-power teams.

The Jared Mosley appearance on Matt Mosley’s podcast is posted here and worth a listen.  Sounded like non-revenue sports will take a hit but football and basketball will continue on.

I don't think we really know how this is going to play out. At first blush it appears that the G5 schools will be a farm club for the P5's in football and men's basketball Also, I assume there will no longer be a requirement to fund a specified number of sports, but just a guess. If not, where is the money coming from? I doubt UNT students will vote to increase their athletic fee., and our alumni have historically [with a few exceptions] provided little in the way of a financial commitment to our Athletic Department.

Tax savings won't offset having to double your donation to account for the Title IX scam

How does it feel to pay $7 million and forego revenue just to be back basically where you were from the start?  Once the SEC and Big 10 finishing raping every other conference we will all be in the same boat.

Feels great.

We're still making more money than we did in the AAC.

And whatever happens with conferences and levels, we won't be back on the level of AAC.

Time for a law suit! 🤬🤬🤬

The problem is that the judges and legislatures are dominated by the Power Teams' alums, not to mention the $$$ those schools bring to their states. A lawsuit is DOA, I'm afraid.

What needs to happen is those 40-50 Power schools (or less) need to breakaway and play their own professional levels of football, basketball, and baseball. Let the rest of us start over again and play against each other in scholarship+stipend setups, with no transfers between schools without costing you a year, just as it used to be.

As others have pointed out, breaking away doesn't stop them from raiding our rosters.  I'm afraid there is no going back.  We all need to push for player contracts.

There is a very real probability that our school may be playing football at a club level in about 15-20 years if nothing changes in the current landscape for the better. Unless we get comfortable with being a juco/stepping stone for the folks up the food chain.

I don't expect football to close up shop. I think UNT and other non-Power 3 schools will end up with other programs that are funded at similar levels. During the Littrell era we were among the best-funded programs in our conference in terms of budget and facilities. We might get better at funding and rise to that level in the American, or drop off to be more like the rest of the G5.

The only gamechanger for us would be to have a coach whose long-term success is transformative, like what Jim Leavitt did at USF from 1997 to 2009.

The difference is SMU is the rich guy who can buy his way to a life boat while UNT drowns down in steerage.

Oh man, this confirms we will blow away our AAC revenue easily

Where do you think SMU and the other lower level P5s are going when the top 40ish programs break away? I guess technically it will be better since there will be other P5 castoffs, but in terms of hierarchy, SMU will be back at the kids table with other G5s.

And you will still play in a stadium that is 3/5 empty. The good ACC schools can’t get out of that conference and away from you fast enough.

I don't think it's necessarily so. Why not make it mandatory for every school that recruits a player by offering him/her NIL money to match that same payment for one year to the athlete's former school? Wouldn't that theoretically, at least  financially, equally compensate the benefitting raiding school with the amount damaged by the school being raided?

It should work since no school would ever be willing to risk its tax-free status and competitive eligibility just to hide player payments.

Of course it would be nearly impossible to institute such a rule as thieves don't want to pay fees, but it's a standardized way to still benefit the NIL raiders while somewhat fairly compensating the NIL raided... and the players still get paid to their value.

SMU is the guy who threw on a woman's dress at the last minute hoping to get on a lifeboat, but he forgot to shave off his Snidely Whiplash mustache.
