At least he seems excited.  What did you expect him to say?  "We're merging with the SEC" !

Wait...

You didn't expect him to say that we're merging with the SEC?

This is the problem with UNT athletics! Our fanbase has such low expectations!

I think those will come in the future.  He really is just a figurehead for the Conference Presidents and ADs.  He may suggest something to them, but they have to sign off on actually doing something.

Fanbase? What fanbase? Even the hardcore followers on gmg are walking away. Very little interest or traffic anymore.  Covid, the portal, NIL and the economy have all taken a hit on what little fan base we had.
Ignoring, or excluding your most ardent supporters during Spring Practice was a pretty shallow decision as well.
I guess when we start the season 6-0 the fans will magically start to show up at Datcu.

Good job killing the fun with inaction, Presidents, ADs, everyone involved.  Once sport becomes only about the money, it’s jumped the shark and time to reboot.

It’s INSANE!!!

So we are encouraged to contribute to a NIL fund to pay players who have absolutely no loyalty to our school and then if we want to watch them play we must buy a ticket, pay for parking etc.?

Count me out.

Bob here has a point... Fund our players, fund our program, buy tickets, pay for parking, overpay on concessions and merchandise.... all while the product inevitably withers away due to all of the rules currently in place. We're getting had coming and going. While the ignorant and rabid fan bases of the big boys can scalp their dumbass alum/fans, I don't think ours will play this game. And if our fans do, for how long? What is the ROI?

And I think the pill would be easier to take if we knew the athletic department personnel were truly committed to the university. But we have a long and ugly history of athletic department personnel being committed to athletic department personnel. Outside of Patrick Cobbs, players or coaches or administrators, who really gives a shit about the University of North Texas? I think it's time, more than ever, to start hiring North Texas people. In this new age of collegiate athletics, passion and meaningful work will have to carry the torch. There is no better way to infuse the athletic department with passion than hiring North Texas people.

I think that’s too simple a view.  If money is being made, then the players deserve a part in that.  I have no issue with that.  What I have issue with is that because there is so much money to be made now, too many bad apples have spoiled it due to inaction or inability of the collective to come together to create rules to keep the games fair.  Now we have a system where everyone (players, coaches, administrations) is in it for themselves because that has become the game.  It’s no longer about staying together and building a team.  It’s about making as much money as you possibly can while you can.

There is no sport in that.

First year in 20+ that I'm hesitant to pull the trigger on renewing my 4 season football tickets.

Tired of never "winning the big game", tired of "it's about me", and "show me the money". Very little or no loyalty to "the team or school".

Maybe I'm too old to be a college football/basketball fan.....

Yep.

They want an NIL?  I want a list of what players are being paid what amount and how their name, image or likeness is being used to earn these dollars. The fans give this money so we have a right to know.
These kids entering the portal and signing elsewhere, I want to know what we offered/paid and what the new school is paying. Too much secrecy when the fan base is paying the salaries.

He doesn't take over until June, he can't start flipping tables before he's even officially in. The main message I see is he wants to sell this conference and get revenue up, that's the only way to compete, and he's willing to explore any avenue to do that. That's a pretty astute and positive thing IMO.

Due to NIL and the portal,  AAC schools have become mere farm clubs for the P-5 who are nearing a monopoly on athletic talent.

Maybe the new UNT logo should be an eagle sitting on a farmer’s plowshare!

He would be well served to come in and preempt the PAC before they begin their poach. Make contingency when we lose Tulane South Florida Rice Memphis to the new ACC.

Need the future AAC to be stronger than the ACC MWC PAC Sun Belt MAC and CUSA.

Climb and build relationships with Big 12 players. We’ve got some basketball schools to do that with and with solid football additions this could be a good goal.
