CHARLOTTE – The UNT men’s basketball team heads into Charlotte Saturday riding a league-leading six-game winning streak and aiming for its first 5-0 start to conference in 35 years.

The Mean Green (11-5, 4-0) and 49ers (10-7, 4-1) are scheduled to tip-off Saturday at 3 p.m. CT from Halton Arena in Charlotte. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ and the Mean Green Sports Network, presented by Learfield.

On Wednesday North Texas defeated East Carolina on the road, 60-59, in one of the most dramatic victories in program history. With 3.1 seconds remaining trailing by one, Aaron Scott chucked a full-court inbound pass nearly 90 feet to Robert Allen who caught it and laid in the game-winning basket.

The victory increased UNT’s winning streak to six in a row and kept them undefeated in the American Athletic Conference standings at 4-0. It is the first time UNT has started conference 4-0 since the 2018-19 season.

A win Saturday at Charlotte would mark the program’s first 5-0 start to a conference slate since 1989 when the Mean Green opened the Southland Conference 5-0. That year, UNT won the Southland Conference regular season title with 10-4 league record. North Texas has never started a conference 6-0.

Charlotte, though, has been a tough road game for North Texas. The Mean Green have lost their last two trips to Halton Arena. Last year, UNT fell 55-49 to the 49ers on the road. The loss snapped a then eight-game winning streak for the Mean Green.

There were nine ties and six lead changes in the game last year, but Charlotte ended the contest making five of their final seven shots to capture the victory. The 49ers held UNT’s leading scorer Tylor Perry to a season-low eight points as he was 3-of-11 from the floor.

Road games at Charlotte haven’t only been difficult for North Texas. The 49ers are 7-1 this year at home and defeated then No. 17 ranked Florida Atlantic at home 70-68 on Jan. 6. Charlotte is 29-9 (.763) at Halton Arena over the last three years.
