How long would it take them to make up $572 million dollars.

One CFP appearance....if they ever got invited, lol.

Even if FSU was successful, are you suggesting it's not a better conference than AAC?

It's still a better conference by every metric, at least for now.  Only God knows whether it will be better 10 years from now.  But I would think even SMU would want to get a good ROI.

Interesting. If you believe SMU’s numbers, they could easily raise $575 million. SMU raised about $100 million in under a week. Yet Florida State, a much bigger football brand, says $572 is too severe a penalty and is suing to reduce the amount. This a a real “get your popcorn ready to watch” moment.

That's a good point for the ACC's attorneys to bring up.

I will bet there are some Dedman alumni amount those who contributed to the $100 million. Those folks might be willing the help the ACC with their case.

Who has invited FSU to join?   They have been pretty irrelevant the past decade. The last 2 years have been ok.  Where will they end up? Big10?  SEC?  AAC?

AAC?  That's funny.

FSU is still a big enough brand that the SEC would take them.  The Big 10's logic is hard to follow, so I have no idea if they'd take them.

FSU, Virginia, and Clemson brought in around $160m in revenue in 2022. That's top 15 territory.

It's about revenue and eyeballs, and the top half of the P-whatevers bring in a lot more of it than the bottom half.

That's why the the formation of the Super League is inevitable, IMO.

I think this move has turned all well for both SMU and the American conference. SMU got to leave the America, something some of their alumni had been despite for. The American was able to bring in Army to replace SMU. Army is clearly a bigger national brand to include next time media rights are negotiated. It really is a win win!

The B1G is probably just waiting for the ACC to collapse as its eyes are likely on UNC and Duke and to a lesser extent Virginia.  Pair these three up with Notre Dame and call it a day.  Not sure how big is too big for these conferences, but there's no reason they cannot operate as multiple virtual conferences under a common "holding" conference.  The big get bigger (no pun intended).

I know you said this in jest, but here is a literal quote from the Chair of Florida State's Board of Trustees:

"The ACC voted, over Florida State's objection, to add three new teams that add no additional pro rata value to the conference."

Didn't they get the memo that SMU is Dallas' team and people care about them??

Oh, they definitely got the memo....hahahaha.

If it collapses to the level what remains of the ACC is AAC level, then it doesn't matter. Everyone outside of B10/SEC at that point is truly just a new FCS and we are all scaling back spend considerably.  It's worth the gamble when the downside is just back where we started.

That said FSU's argument is phenomenally weak. They're essentially saying (as disclosed so far):

1. The contract they signed repeatedly is not fair

2. They can't compete for championships in the ACC (history does not support this plus the playoff further weakens their argument)

3. Adding 3 teams made finances worse (despite FSU set to get more money because of it) and hurts strength of schedule (despite SMU Cal and Stanford being at least in the middle of the ACC by any poll or calculation)

There has to be something more to it or it's all performative.

It's not a matter of FSU. If FSU sets the precedent the 5 or 6 brand names holding the ACC together will also bolt. Clemson, Miami, UNC, VATech, etc are all watching very closely.

We know this. At SMU they're paying to be a part of that new FCS. It's all pretty funny.

And when they're all gone, SMU can play football with Syracuse who USF just blew out 45-0 yesterday in their bowl game.
