"I think we should all be independent in football," Kelly said. "You can have a 64-team conference that's in the Power 5 and you can have a 64-team conference in the Group of 5, and we separate it and we play each other."

Kelly said he believes there should be one TV contract that includes every conference, where potential regional divisions are sponsored by brands and the overall media offering is stronger and more appealing to potential TV partners.

We basically had this setup once and then OU rolled a snowball down a hill.

One big conference for football and then regional conferences for remaining sports is a good idea, probably the best one for long term survival, but greed will somehow get in the way.

64 is too large for a separate conference really.  There are only about a dozen schools that can move the needle nationally, another dozen who have large regional followings, and another dozen who do well enough within their own market to justify their existence $-wise.  If the point is for the Ohio States and the UTs of the worlds to maximize their value, I imagine they would like to keep in to within 40 teams.

How do you divide the TV coverage and revenue with one or two large conferences?

It seems that the only way for it to work is keep what we've got.  Otherwise the two biggest conferences will dominate the TV revenue, just as they do now, except even more.  If there were a way to accurately gauge TV audiences or use Nielsen TV households, each conference could get a fair share.
