Yes, definitely situation based. Unless that athlete is in the top 1% of their sport, I don’t see the value of our NIL(s) investing in anything outside of football and men’s basketball.

I don't blame those kids at all. I'm just pointing out that some are messing up their one chance at a debt free college education which could also be used to generate wealth long term. Many are being sold on this idea that they can go get 500k+ as soon as they hit the portal but the reality is, most probably won't get that kind of money, especially when they've been a bench warmer their first year or two. 

These kids are being taken advantage of and I hate it for them. Enter the portal and secure the bag! Even worst is our coaches telling guys to hit the road because they won't have a spot. What if that kid doesn't find a home? No paid college education for them? All of this is BS and I hate it for the kids who end up losing their scholarships. I also hate it for those like Shorter who got paid a year and then was likely told to hit the road. I hope he at least got his degree because these coaches don't seem to give a damn. I want UNT to do well but this system is broken and the only real losers are the kids who just aren't quite good enough for the big programs.

I remember freshman year, I was walking back to my room at Maple Hall when I saw a friend studying in one of the common rooms. I was surprised because it was Friday night and he was usually out partying. He said he was failing his classes so his brother pulled him aside one day and told him "all these people you're partying with aren't going to pay your bills if you fail out of college. You'll just be the guy they partied with while their parents paid tuition so they could get a degree." He grew up in Garland and me in Dallas so I understood the message and got my grades up as well. My brother went to 3 Dallas ISD high schools and then the military. I got to go to college. Sometimes staying put and finishing your studies IS the way out.

Want to solve this issue?  Give these kids a choice.  You can select a scholarship and small monthly stipend that covers all of your costs and allows you some spending money.   You are also able to make money off of your name, image, or likeness with local sponsorship/marketing deals, or you can pay for your education, housing, etc. and take money from a collective.  Your choice.  You can also transfer once for free.  The second time, you sit a year, third time sit two years and so forth.

It’s not about screwing other athletes. Either their name, imagine, and likeness is worth the money or it’s not. Forgive me if I think keeping the starting QB of a revenue generating sport is more important than a member of the swimming team. Harsh? Maybe. But it’s reality.

In no particular order:
 

1. This is entirely on the NCAA for castrating itself and having no regulatory authority over this whole deal.  It’s hard for me to justify being mad at a kid (even though I am) for entering the portal with the way NIL is and their high ideas of improving draft status.  
 

2. Culture these days has changed to the point where it is ultimately about the self and not the team.  While I understand, we’ve gone way too far with this as a society. So part of it is on how they’re raised and part if it is on their selfishness (more than one thing can be true at the same time and we sometimes forget that).
 

3. It’d be so killer if Cam Ward wanted to come connect back with Eric.

4. I’d hate to have to navigate this chaos as a coach these days.

5. My favorite thing on earth (CFB) is currently disgusting me.

6. To the “drop football” crowd (and I say this with respect), nut up.  Be tough.  That means with dollars and tickets and all of that, assuming you care.  Divesting right now is a death spiral.  We need to push for actual regulation reform in the meantime so this chaos calms down and we regret each dollar spent less as it gets fixed…but if we give up, this whole thing is gone.  I don’t desire that future for my University, for my kids, for the memories I hope to make.  Don’t become one to the alumni we are all already disappointed in.  Hold the f’n rope and let’s stay in this thing. 

7. In my heart, I’m pissed as hell at CR for this.  That really blows.  In my head, he’s just playing the game within the rules he’s afforded.  It doesn’t make much sense to emote beyond that.

Didn’t say it was a nightmare situation. But being the starting quarterback at North Texas and having the kind of season Chandler Rogers just had is a lifetime experience that cannot be quantified by any amount of money. 
I’ve never been the starting quarterback at North Texas. Can you imagine what that must have been like? It had to have been an amazing experience.

Chandler Rogers is selling the opportunity to run that back. Maybe he freaking levels up and turns himself into an NFL draft pick. Maybe he finds himself on a roster with 2-3 QBs better than him and never sees the field again. 

I don’t know what will happen. But being the starting quarterback at North Texas is still a hell of a gig.

Something that doesn’t get mentioned enough about the transfer portal: In this ME ME ME era, look at how much attention these kids get when they announce they are hitting the portal. 

Suddenly their names appear in articles, they get retweets and likes. Their friends and ex-teammates reach out to them with positive validations. And a whole flood of coaches are messaging them telling them how great they are and how much better they will be at this or that school. 

Meanwhile, no one talks about the kid who just stays where he is, busts his rear in the weight room and makes good grades. 

Just another screwed up incentive of entering the transfer portal.

Most adults still use most all of these things….. ya know the adults who buy season tickets and actually donate to the university…. But I guess one day all the money will dry up and we will just get stuck with a bunch people sitting around on TikTok or their phones or podcasts yapping about nothing… cool
