Coaches salaries are usually extremely supplemented by donor dollars.
If the donors are OK with the new hire, and he's making less than what Hodge made, Mosely can ask them to simply re-assign their same contributions (or possibly give more if the donors really like the new hire!) from the coaching staff to NIL.
I don't really feel like Mosely should get much credit for the Hodge hire. It was the most obvious hire he will have ever made. It would have been a botched hire if he went with anyone else. Anyone with at least 1/2 of a normal person's cognitive function would have made that hire.
Now, Coach Burton's hire was a really nice one. It gives me a little hope that the MBB hire will also be a good one.
I don't know exactly how the NIL works when it comes to intermingling with university dollars but you might not be able to transfer one to another. Would someone who actually knows jump in. Thanks
You can really tell the posters who don't pay much attention to NCAA MBB outside of UNT or March Madness around here. We get lists of guys who either currently coach or used to coach at UNT, guys that UNT played against recently, or old unemployed guys that had some March success at some point.
Remember when the Benford disaster ended? Who had Grant McCasland lined up as an option prior to the week before hiring? Let's let this thing play out and hopefully Mosely isn't lazy about it. I wouldn't be surprised to see a completely different name pop up and gain steam sometime soon.
Jared has a high-level background in basketball and is 2-for-2 on basketball hires. Plus, he is still buddy/buddy with Thin Wren, who might be the best in the country at hiring basketball coaches. I’m sure Thin Wren gave Jared a list of coaching names to investigate too.
Plus, if I was Jared, I might pay our new head coach way less than Grant/Ross and use the savings for men’s basketball NIL.
I mean will that coach’s life be much different making $400K a year than it would be making $800K a year?
That much money towards NIL at our level can make a HUGE impact on the quality of players that the new coach lands.
