No, but we've discussed on this board before that people push for playing Texas FCS teams because according to them our fans are familiar with them and will get our fans to come out, as well as that they bring a good away crowd. I don't recall ever seeing a large number of away fans for an FCS game, maybe some sparse ones here and there, but nothing that was notable.

Ah. Yeah, that's stupid.

Good UNT teams will bring the fans out.  Think about the Mason Fine days.  Fun times.  So long ago.

You mean like all of the bowl games that we lost with Fine at QB? Three of the FIU games where we got our butts kicked. That La Tech game we lost after going undefeated leading into the game and blowing it in front of probably the largest crowd of the year......or for a long time. Going 4-8 in 2019....losing the last three games of that year.   I could go on and on.

Sorry Phil. But when we played teams with outstanding defenses, we almost always lost......even when running up good passing stats.

Proportionally, we brought in just as many fans when we were having good years in 1-AA. In fact our first sell-out EVER at Fouts was against SFA in the late 80's. According to the people who regularly sneer at our 1-AA days they didn't care that we were 1-AA. Someone promoted the game to them and they came in (proportionately) record numbers.

Silver, I did say “good UNT teams”.  Not, good “winning” teams.  I know, “ whose on first”.

Those teams did bring the fans out.  And no, I would never advocate dropping to 1AA again.  No conferences with SFA or Lamar U.  We live or die in FBS.  Just my opinion.

What is Brian Vito’s take on this game?  BTW, whatever happened to Vito?

Brett Vito is still where he always has been, covering North Texas athletics at the Denton Record-Chronicle as penance for his sins in an earlier life.

Brett.  What was I thinking!  Thanks for confirming that he’s still the UNT beat writer.

I don't remember that, but I think playing an FCS team was considered a tune-up game in reaction to the old days when our out-of-conference games were dominated by playing top 10 teams, and we would all be hoping we had enough healthy players left for conference games.

Which is understandable at the time. Even a game every few years or to get 7 home games isn't bad, but we should definitely move away from it as the CFP expands. We don't have the marquee programs in conference to justify not playing a stronger opponent if we can get them.
