Week 3 Observations

What a difference a week makes. Congratulations to Coach Morris on his first victory as the leader of our Mean Green! It was nice to see that the staff made adjustments. The defense came out in a 4 man front a few times and they didn't give up a first down until the 10 minute mark of the 2nd quarter. We gave up 432 yards this week, which is a 16% improvement from last week. On offense, we had 47 rushes for 249 yards and 41 (25 completions) passes for 313 yards. We produced a total of 562 yards. We had 1 fumble (screenshot updated). The team had 9 penalties for 115 yards tonight. I am sure there will be a big emphasis on this during the next two weeks. Regardless, we won last night. GMG!

 

Observations:

Chandler Rogers was efficient and made plays last night. He had a great command of the offense and did a fantastic job throwing the ball. He completed around 60% of his passes (24-41) for 313 yards and 2 TDs. Additionally, he ran for 45 yards. It seemed most of his runs were for first downs when the pocket broke down. Overall, he was very impressive!

Roderic Burns was great all night as well. He was open all night and made several big plays for us. He has 11 receptions for 134 yards. Also, shoutout to Ja'Mori Maclin and Damon Ward they caught both of Chandler's touchdown passes.

Ayo Adeyi the La Tech killer had a hell of a game. He had several big runs for us last night. It seems he always does well against La Tech. I was excited to see him step up tonight. He ended up rushing for 148 yards and 2 TDs. Also, shoutout to Oscar Adaway who had 44 yards rushing tonight. He had multiple tough runs that set up first downs for us.

Shout out to Noah Rauschenberg and Sawyer Evans tonight. If Pat McAfee watched our game film, I am sure he would be excited to watch these 2 guys.  Noah drilled a 25, 22, 48 and 31 yard field goal (game winner). Sawyer Evans had a 64 yard punt that pinned La Tech deep. 

The defense played much better tonight. They gave up 82 yards less this week, caused multiple 3 and outs, and also had a few big stops on 4th down. I was encouraged to see the coaches make adjustments and play us in the 4 man front on some drives. Shoutout to Mazin "Amazing" Richards who had 5 tackles, 3 for loss, and 1 sack. It was nice to see him blitzing from the edge again. Rod Brown had 3 QB hurries tonight. He did a great job on the 4th down stop late in the game as well. Kevin Wood was our leading tackler with 9 total (7 solo). Logan Wilson was solid in coverage and had 8 tackles (6 solo) tonight. The 2 redshirt freshman Patrick Smith and Ethan Wesloski continue to have big games for us. Patrick had 7 tackles (2 solo) and Ethan had 6 tackles (3 solo). They both did great jobs making tackles in space. Bryce Linder also had 6 tackles (3 solo). It was nice to see the defense respond to the adversity they have faced the last 2 weeks. I hope we continue to improve each week and add more wins. GMG!

I had the stats from Mean Green Sports up this morning while working on it. It's possible that either I missed it, or they didn't have it updated properly. I can update later this morning when I'm back on my laptop.

Nice job.

Chandler's pocket presence is strong. The pocket was collapsing around him and he escaped a number of times, often times for significant yardage. His peripheral vision is superior and/or he has a great feel for what is happening behind him.

It actually would have been a long gainer had the exchange been better.  Instead of Adaway handing off the football he flipped in the air to the guy coming at him and it bounced off his chest.  Hard to judge speed of a ball flipped at you opposite direction of 5 feet...just hold it out and hand it off and all would have been good.

The play was absolutely unnecessary given how successful we were playing it straight up. Not only was it an unneeded risk (that failed miserably and was a big momentum and point swing) but it showed future opponents the play. Just a terrible call and a sign of overconfidence from a staff that has no right to it.

I was trying to remember the last time we had a qb with over 300yds and no turnovers? It was great to see his deep balls. I hope we see more 4 man fronts. If we are going to fill the box , I would like to see more of a commitment with an actual 4-3-4 with some size. Might be a chance to get Rudder in the loop? Summary was great.

In my opinion:,

Offense-

We showed improvement in offensive execution, tempo, and energy. We were able to adjust tempo based on need. Early we ran clock and when needed, we stepped on the gas which was a positive change.  Rogers did a good job of moving the ball and used his legs to make plays. We need to convert TD's in the red zone as the game would have been very different had we grabbed the extra 8 points that were left on the table on the two early field goals. When we establish the run, it opens up the passing game.  I am not a big fan of the bunch set into the boundary but that is an Air Raid mindset.  As been mentioned, the reverse was unnecessary and really gave them a spark.

Defense-

I liked the personnel changes as well as being multiple up front to keep things interesting. 21, 32, and 15 were very active all night and the overall energy of the defense was good. Ironically when we knocked out the starting QB, the back-up actually played better and threw a better ball which hurt us a few times in the 4th quarter. I like when we were able to roll the MLB off the edge in the condensed 2 tight end formations they were running in the second half. We did have some penalties but I don't think we got any calls last night. Both roughing the passer calls were not roughing. Heck they even had to conference on them. We caught every 50/50 call and they got the pass in most cases. Overall the safeties did a better job with run support but we still have much to improve across the board. We looked more physical and they had a lot of offensive guys that left the game for injuries or being banged up on a play. If we can continue to be physical that will help us defend the run for sure. This is the first game we were the more physical team. I was glad to see us get to the QB multiple times which has been lacking. Not perfect by any stretch but good things to build on as we continue to improve execution.   

 

Kicking -

Outstanding all the way around.

I was at my in-laws for the weekend and followed on my phone, but not as closely as I would have preferred, so I watched it again last night.  Here are my observations.  Do with them as you please.

1.  The opening drive was a thing of beauty.  Seventeen plays, ate up half of the first quarter and set the tone for the evening.

2.  Poor red zone execution led to too many FG's and not enough TD's, including to end that awesome first drive.

3. How that ref missed that PI on the first drive is beyond me, but it set the tone for them as well.  They sucked all night long.

4.  Adeyi and Adaway looked great.  I would love to see BK Jackson and Farrar get some looks as well late.

5. Starting in the 4-2-5 was brilliance and led to a three and out.  Good to see Rausaw back on the DL.  Would love to see him add another 30 pounds.  He is listed at 6'3" and 275 lbs. and looks lean.  Has a great frame that could handle some more weight.  Put Rod and Enoch at DT with Rausaw and Richards at DE.

6. Rogers is so calm in the pocket.  Just love it and he throws a great ball, very accurate.  Works through his progressions and runs when needed.

7.  OL looked solid, outside of Moreka getting pancaked into Rogers.

8.  Our WR room is freaking deep.

9.  Tackling is much better when we are attacking and being aggressive on D.  It suffers when we go to the "read 'n react" scheme that allowed that final TD by LA Tech.  Of course, Kropp wraps up the QB and gets called for roughing, so that has to effect their mindset to a degree.

10.  If our DB's weren't in prevent, Harris would have never scored the TD that tied the game. 

11.  Proud of how calm Rogers and the offense moved down the field for the winning FG.  They could have panicked or gone in to the "whoa is me" mode, but they just moved right down the field.

12.  Good win that should allow us to enter conference play at 2-2.

One point I missed, on the fumbled reverse, Adaway didn't look at Horton on the pitch which caused the missed connection.  If Horton had caught that, he was flat out gone.  LA Tech's defense was sold out to stop Adaway and had completely lost containment on the backside.  Just a lost opportunity on a play call that really caught the Dogs off guard.
