Army-Navy football game staying on CBS through 2028

The Army-Navy football rivalry will remain in its current television home until at least 2028 thanks to an agreement between the service academies and CBS Sports announced Thursday.

Terms weren't disclosed for the 10-year deal, which goes into effect after the current contract expires in 2018. Sources told Forbes that the current deal, inked in 2008, costs the network about $5 million a year, leading the financial publication in 2012 to label it "The most undervalued television deal in sports."

In 2009, the game moved to its new home on the second Saturday of December, making it the only top-tier college football contest on the schedule that day. The shift "allowed us to further shine a spotlight on Army-Navy, as we tell the compelling stories on and off the field of the young people at the service academies," said Sean McManus, chairman of CBS Sports, in a news release announcing the deal.

VCU and Dayton are the 2 being talked about as the non-football members. I don't know enough about either to pick which I'd prefer.

That’s extremely tough tbh. I will say Dayton has a DEEP fanbase. Regularly a top 25 team in attendance.

We should be happy with either one. Both great programs! VCU fits geographically. Dayton a little less but might be a bigger fan base overall. Both great

I think Dayton has a more National brand.  We could play them in the Charleston Tourney second game, either them or LSU.

Army for football, VCU for basketball. Let's do this.

Why would we need a basketball add? If we have east/west divisions it might make sense, but otherwise 13 teams would be fine. Before we joined there were 11 teams.

Both would be quality basketball adds, but Dayton would be my preference

Army and Navy are so boring to watch. Handoff....run, handoff other side...run, option...run. BORING.

I'm sure that's why Army-Navy is one of the most-watched games every year.

Army is the ONLY football brand of significance east of the Great Plains left in play.

If it ain't Army the pool is a bunch of programs that are median AAC quality or worse.

Sun Belt has Georgia State and ODU and hold your head right you can put Texas State in the pool.

CUSA has FIU and can good faith argue MTSU/Nashville. Liberty is the biggest brand though not an urban(ish) state school like most of the league.

MAC has Buffalo (who is in the AAU), Toledo and well sure NIU is technically in the Chicago TV market. Can sort of claim Indianapolis with Ball State or Ann Arbor/Detroit with Eastern Michigan but yeah it's Buffalo and Toledo that actually fit the model.

No one in the is anything more than a spot filler and question is the spot in the middle or somewhere down at the bottom.

It is usually the only college game available to watch. Move it to say Thanksgiving and let's see how it does.

Yes, Army has a National following and brand, those others mentioned are not even close.  Probably because of Servicemen around the world and all the Army/Navy National games every year.  But not so much because they have been that great in football.

If the AAC gets Army and VCU, I think Aresco has us positioned well when the ACC inevitably explodes. I wrote a thread about it here:

If the ACC is able to stay together when the top brands leave and backfill, SMU may block us from the list of invitations which would leave us in a mediocre version of CUSA 3.0. That would suck.

However, if Aresco has a healthy media deal to lure the middle-of-the-pack brands to the AAC, he could effectively kill the ACC and leave SMU behind forcing them to join CUSA, Sun Belt, or go independent.

Interesting.  I didn't know Dayton had such a big following.   On paper VCU looks like it's been the more successful program of the two over the last couple decades.
