To me, it means a preliminary effort before negotiations get serious.   Kinda like buying a car.  You go look at it, and see if it's something you're interested in...  And if you want it, you start the real haggling.

I wouldn't read too much into the verbiage used. He wasn't going to come out and say "well hell yeah we're negotiating with them!" when there are still so many variables.

Agree.  He was going to do a zoom meeting with them, then go visit each to sell the AAC proposal.   I think the meeting with the AAC Presidents before was to either get concessions to offer them or discuss scheduling with them.... and perhaps the raid on the MWC next!!  lol

Excerpts from the pay-walled article, AAC commissioner Mike Aresco: League has ‘contingency plans’ if SMU leaves for ACC:

"Aresco said the league can operate with an odd number of members, if needed, and that if the Dallas-based SMU were to leave, the conference would look smart for having added the University of North Texas...

"...Aresco reiterated his opposition to the terms “Power 5” and “Group of 5.” He believes they directly led to the latest round of realignment and to the Bay Area schools’ pursuit of the ACC alongside SMU.

“I’ve talked about how destructive this whole P5 thing can be,” Aresco said. “It’s all about branding. It’s all about the P5 conferences...

"Aresco said he expects the ACC to make a final decision on expansion “fairly soon.”

Boise State and San Diego State. Potentially Colorado State and Air Force.

So far the trend has been power leagues disregard travel because the money is more than enough to put the unpaid "help" on airplanes. Absent money in the $30 million or more range, the trend has been geographic. A conference might be spread over a sizable range but has geographic clusters that lend themselves to regions. AAC is basically a SW conference and east coast conference. Sun Belt is South and East, MAC splits fairly nicely. CUSA is cobbled up post-raid and MWC is as compact as the west allows you to be.

If I were guessing, AAC commissioner WANTS to go really big, maybe something like Washington State, Oregon State, SDSU, Boise and one of Air Force or UNLV.

What remains to be seen is can he get the money to make that worth East Carolina kicking off at 10pm eastern time or for Washington State to kickoff at 9am Pacific.

Go get 'em, Mike. Then let's grab CSU, SDSU, UNLV, Boise, and Air Force to get to 20. Tulsa would probably get moved to an Eastern Division, but at least we'd still have a few decent drive partners in UTSA, Rice, CSU, and Air Force.

Mike kicked the tires and they quickly deflated. AAC westward expansion is off the table.

Because it didn't come off as not really trying or serious. Having a zoom meeting instead of meeting in person like the MWC seems like a lack of commitment. The MWC were bold and open about meeting with those two schools. The optics did not look good for the AAC.
