DENTON – The UNT women’s soccer team outshot Northwestern State 22-4 in route to a 3-0 home opening victory Sunday night at the Mean Green soccer and Track & Field stadium.

The Mean Green (2-0) got goals Sunday from sophomore Kat Burnell in the 11th minute, junior Bailey Wesco in the 15th minute and sophomore Summer Brown scored her second goal of the young season in the 56th minute.

Through two matches, North Texas has yet to give up a goal this season and has won each of the matches by a score of 3-0.

“We’ve got a lot of depth in the back,” said freshman defender Sarah Peyton Webb. “And we’re still pretty new but we’re getting pretty comfortable and keeping opponents from getting good looks.”

UNT is now 26-2-1 all-time in home openers.

The man who has led the program since its birth in 1995, John Hedlund, creeped closer to the 400-win mark after Sunday’s win over the Lady Demons (0-1) as he collected his 387th career victory. He ranks 10th in the nation among active DI women’s soccer head coaches but fourth among coaches who have been at just one university.

Scoring goals was not a concern for Hedlund going into the season and on Sunday the Mean Green showed why as not only did they score three again but now five different players for UNT have found the back of the net.

The Mean Green next hit the road again as they travel to Texas State on Thursday. First kick is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. CT. Texas State will also enter the match with a 2-0 record and has outscored its opponents by a combined score of 8-2 so far.

Olympic Sport Passes for this season's Mean Green volleyball, soccer and softball seasons are available now. Fans can purchase a general admission Olympic Sport Pass for $75 and receive season tickets for all three teams. Watched this last night on ESPN+.  Total domination.  That front line of Wesco, Burnell and Brown is tough.  Sarah Peyton Webb, true freshman, is really good and will become a great one for us.  Our defense is suffocating.  I think I could play goalie for us.

The facility looked great.  Amazing that the turf looked so good considering the heat this summer.  One question though, why are the stands on the east side facing west?  Considering the current set up, it would look better on television if they used a camera tower on the west side facing the east.

This $1 million gift helped kick start UNT Athletics' fundraising campaign for the Athletics Center Expansion, which aims to enhance the student-athlete experience through a focus on holistic development both in the classroom and in competition. The expansion will provide state-of-the-art facilities designed to support student-athletes' physical, mental, and academic growth. "I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to Wilson and Jane Jones for their continued support of UNT,” Mosley said. “Their belief in the power of sports as a transformational tool has made an incredible impact on our student-athletes. “Through their generosity, they will help us Build Champions and Prepare Leaders long into the future. Their commitment to our mission inspires us every day, and we are proud to have them as partners in this journey. Wilson Jones is a 1985 UNT graduate. The family previously donated $5 million to UNT in 2022 to create The Wilson Jones Career Center in the G. Brint Ryan College of Business. He retired as CEO of Oshkosh Corporation in 2021. Jones led the company to a No. 8 ranking on Barron’s 100 Most Sustainable Companies list, a Glassdoor Employees’ Choice Award for being one of the best places to work, recognition as a Military Friendly Employer by Victory Media and one of Ethisphere Institute’s World’s Most Ethical Companies, as well as a spot as one of The Wall Street Journal's “Best Managed Companies” from 2017 to 2019. “As a proud graduate of UNT, I have seen firsthand the power of higher education and the role athletics plays in shaping the lives and futures of young leaders,” Jones said. “Jane and I are excited to contribute and support the Athletics Center Expansion campaign.       Looks to me like the decimal point is in the wrong place - while still high, $30 for the pizza and $19 for the wings would be more like it. An intentional price override? Was anyone else gouged? I don't know if we'll hear any more about it...

      Great comment. I remember a few years back the coach at northwestern made a comment how one year he was Big ten coach of the year I believe and a year or two later he had a poor season and all of a sudden everybody said he could no longer coach. He turned around the next season and had a good one and also he could coach again. Lot of things going to having coaches be successful. Especially now when you can buy players it can make an average coach look really good and a good coach that can't afford the players going to look bad.
