Scrimmage Highlights 

Adaway Rushing TD with Ruder at QB running mixed 1/2s 3 and out first 2 drives to start scrimmage

Running more short yardage situations, stacking with 4 up front on both 1s and 2s defensively

Earle with Mahomes type pass to McMillian for TD, across the body throw.

Mixing up reps with QBs and teams on offense.

Rogers moving ball better with short yardage passes.

Rushing TD from Farrar/Johnson?

Faster pace tempo especially with Rogers.

Adaway looking back to full form.

Still need to work on faster paced offense, not efficient.

Great fast paced drive resulted in field goal from freshman kicker

Basically blocked punt with 2s on special teams.

Earle across the body TD to Smart, moved the ball much better. Was against 2nd team D

Linebackers scare me, a lot of over the middle action and not a lot of coverage in what should be dropped back to contain

Logan Wilson great deflection in endzone.

Sawyer Evans with nice line drive with solid roll punts.

Noah Raschenberg with a solid foot, knocked down a 49 yarder on left hash.

Failed Flee Flicker with Rogers.

Earle with an off balance 50 yard BOMB to Damon Ward who made an unbelievable catch in TRIPLE COVERAGE against mixed 1s

Horton with two really solid double reverse runs, better blocking to get more yards compared to last year.

Dropped INT on bad throw from Rogers in endzone.

Sita Leota/Kevin Wood/Ayo still not playing

Very Good Notes from @ntmeangreen11:

 

QB- Stone Earle (#3) is your QB. He made one incredible play scrambling and throwing a 30 yard TD across his body right before he went out of bounds. Later on he made a truly remarkable play throwing a 50+ yard TD after escaping the pocket scrambling to his left. I feel bad for Rogers, it's not like he did anything bad tonight, Earle is just the guy.

RB- We already know about the big 4. Farrar got plenty of reps and showed his patience and shiftiness, good player and his deceptive size helps him.

WR- Trey Cleveland is impressive, hopefully he can fill a good bit of the void Shorter left behind. Maclin/ Burns will be good, Ward/Horton/Jordan Smart should all get plenty of snaps. Landon Sides flashed a little as well and got time returning kicks.

OL- First unit looked solid enough, #67 Miner had a couple big blocks including one straight up pancake of #94 Marcus Moore. 2nd team RT Larry Brown looked really good, a little back story about him: At Tech Matt Wells wanted to switch him to DL, then the new coach swapped him back to OL and he lost valuable practice time during spring training one of the years he was there. When he transferred here this year he dropped a weight on his foot and again missed valuable practice time. He is just now getting a bunch of reps at his natural position and should something happen to Duncan we are in very good hands. The big kid from Ohio (404 lbs) looked more nimble than I expected for the 3's.

DL- We are extremely undersized for a 3 man front and I am genuinely worried. I saw the guy we made a priority to sign from JUCO #94 Marcus Moore get flatlined and pushed around on several other plays. If one of Mazin Richards or Brown go down for an extended period we are going to be in a world of hurt. The second unit did little to inspire me. We don't have experienced linebackers to count on to fill the gaps this is a big concern to me, maybe other posters aren't as doom and gloom about this position as I am but this is not a strength in my eyes.

LB- Lots of young and green players getting playing time. I like their hustle, I think Wesloski has got something, I'm going to wait and reserve judgement until we play but if I had to guess this will be a maddening group with some blown coverages and mistakes who is hopefully rounding in to form during the second half of the season.

DB- I think both Nakwaasah and Phil Hill have got something. Surprised at the length and athleticism of some of these guys. Loved the leadership I saw from this group.

Inject designed runs to Horton into my veins, he is electric in space. I am also very excited to watch this new offense, Aune wasn’t as bad as some think but he certainly wasn’t a QB that takes you far

I knew we would be young at LB this year. That's been a rather strong position in years past for us. Hopefully the lights come on for some of these young guys.

The he defense has been this team’s Achilles heel for years. McCarney had one good year with a defense and won a bowl. Dodge years scored lots of points but couldn’t stop anyone. Littrell years were the same, no defense (3 man or 4 man fronts). Littrell started running the ball mostly to take advantage of our backs and to eat as much clock as possible to keep the opposing offense of the field. 
If Morris/Caponi don’t recruit better defensive linemen and LB’s, then we will repeat the mantra. “Explosive offense, but easy to score on.”

Praying that our new defensive coaches can recruit…

It's two weeks until the beginning of the season. If you are going to pray, then pray that our defensive coaches can properly assess the strengths and needs of the defense and then coach the hell out of them in the next two weeks......and then coach the hell out of them during the game.

I guess some people have amnesia with Reffett. When we had the right guys 2017-2019 our defense was good to great at times. 
 

Might be a bit rough this season, but I expect they’ll right the ship. Just gotta recruit their asses off.

Sure, they have to recruit better front 7 personnel. We knew that. After they became accustomed to our game film, they knew that. Things have changed. There is no more incremental improvements in weak areas. Incremental improvement is gone forever (hopefully not forever) with the rules in place. Our defensive staff knew our personnel and they knew it needed to be shored up. It's about going after high impact high school recruits that can and will help in the future AND productive transfers from the portal that will help NOW. Yeah, yeah they're going into their 1st season with one 1/2 of a recruiting season under their belt. Well, isn't UAB? FAU? CLT in the same scenario? 

I can live with holes in the roster. I can't live with it as being a season altering excuse when the rules let coaches hem up their roster YoY as they see fit. Oh? They couldn't get the transfers they needed/wanted? Again, not our problem as fans. That's their problem(s). I'm not tryin to doom and gloom, just pointing out the rules in place.

So, based on these two accounts, it sounds like Earle is making electric plays that keep him in the convo,

…while Rogers seems to be moving the ball more consistently - minus the big plays.

would this be a good assessment of how they compare right now?

I agree with this but I knew they weren’t going to shore up everything on defense in one cycle. Was hoping they’d bring in some better LBs. Guess we’ll start seeing what we got in two weeks.

Sounds that way... and sprinting away from pressure and heaving the ball into triple coverage 40 yards for a Christmas gift of a completion does not sale me. If Earle is doing that AND making the routine look routine then sign me up.

Scouting report says Rogers still started with first team offense.  To me that implies Rogers was still deemed starter at the beginning of the scrimmage.  Maybe that changes next scrimmage?  Maybe I'm reading too much into it.  But I don't want a Seth-start to the season where the starter is pulled the first time we are down two scores or because of an interception on a panic throw.  I want a QB to separate themselves and other QBs still be happy, lol.

Was our highest rated lineman, Paula Vaipulu, present?  I find it hard to believe that he hasn't made, at least, the second team OLine.  Did Datraveon Brown play? He spent much of last year in a cast but announced that he was fit and ready for this year.

I don’t discount those years. We weren’t at the bottom of the FBS defensively (slightly worse than 50%) and I hoped we would keep trending up but that didn’t happen and we went back down to the bottom of the FBS.

Defense needs to improve quickly!!! Whether it’s scheme, players, coaches, or all three.

 I am tired of seeing other programs play better than us (see UTSA, UAB, FAU). 
Offense is exciting to watch but defense wins games.

Chandler was recruited to be the starter, he will be the starter. I like Earle as far as hustle and running ability, but Seth never used him due to arm strength. No D-1 experience like Rogers. Earle is a great change of pace backup, but he is not capable of consistently moving the ball vs Berkeley. Rudder May have an arm but he is way too slow

Think of it this way: transfers make their move to either 1) be more high profile AKA start or, 2) go to a specific school.

In other words, I don't think Rogers was targeting Denton.  I think Morris reached out and told him he needs a QB.

Judging a QB based on Seth Littrell’s assessment is not a great way to go about it.

He’s never played nor coached the position. He lucked into Mason Fine and having Graham Harrell develop him.

I don’t care who it is. It’d be cool to see Earle beat the odds but as long as we’re winning I don’t care who it is.

That's Old New Denton mentality. We need you to get on that New New Denton mentality. Stone Cold Earle is about to hang 40 on Cal in that triple digit heat on September 2nd.
