What this means, Tim explains, is not shying away from making one's parts simpler if it's going to serve the song better, or if that's what the star in the room (or their producer) thinks is needed for the occasion. To illustrate his point, Tim shared the experience of fellow session legend Dean Parks:

"Dean Parks told me the other day that, after he graduated from [University of] North Texas, the jazz school, he realized, 'I know exactly how to be a jazz virtuoso, but I want to be a rhythm player, go to LA and do studio work. And he said, 'That meant I became a drummer on the guitar.' You're a drummer, when you play rhythm guitar."
