Women’s Basketball Reveals Non-Conference Schedule

DENTON, Texas – In the first year under head coach Jason Burton, the UNT women’s basketball program has announced a challenging non-conference slate for the 2023-24 season. The Mean Green will open the season with a home matchup against UNT Dallas on Nov. 6 preceded by an exhibition contest against Oklahoma Christian on Nov. 2 inside the Super Pit.
 
UNT will play 12 non-conference matchups consisting of five contests at home, five true road games and two neutral site contests.
 
After the season opener, the Mean Green will welcome Grambling State to Denton for its first DI matchup on Thursday, Nov. 9.
 
Following the first two home contests, UNT will hit the road for six straight matchups away from the Super Pit, starting with a game Sunday, Nov. 12 at Texas A&M. North Texas will be looking for its first win over the Aggies since 1999.
 
The Mean Green will then travel to Nacogdoches, Texas, to take on SFA on Thursday, Nov. 16 and to Carbondale, Illinois, to face off with Southern Illinois Sunday, Nov. 19.
 
UNT will spend the Thanksgiving holiday weekend in Hattiesburg, Miss., for the 36th Annual Lady Eagle Thanksgiving Classic hosted by Southern Miss. North Texas will take on Samford on Friday, Nov. 24 and North Dakota on Saturday, Nov. 25.
 
After the trip to Mississippi, the Mean Green return home for three consecutive home matchups, starting with a contest on Friday, Dec. 1 against Pepperdine.
 
Each of the next two contests will be inside the Super Pit as well as UNT faces off with Arkansas Pine Bluff on Wednesday, Dec. 6 and Alcorn State on Saturday, Dec. 9.
 
The final two non-conference matchups will both be road matchups against a pair of teams the Mean Green played a season ago as they will face Louisiana on Sunday, Dec. 17 and Montana State on Thursday, Dec. 21 in Lafayette, Louisiana, and Bozeman, Montana, respectively.
 
There will be a lot of new opponents this season as it will be UNT’s first matchup in program history with UNT Dallas, Grambling, Southern Illinois, North Dakota, Pepperdine and Arkansas Pine Bluff.

Earlier this year, UNT’s AAC opponents were revealed that will make up the other 20 games of the 2023-24 schedule. The Mean Green will take on UAB, Charlotte, Florida Atlantic and UTSA and SMU in both home and away contests, will welcome East Carolina, Memphis, Tulane and Wichita State to the Super Pit for the lone matchups between the programs and will travel to Rice, USF, Temple and Tulsa for road-only contests to round out the schedule.
 
The first conference dates will be December 29-31, 2023 and league play will run through March 6, 2024. The 2024 American Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Championship will expand to a 14-team tournament and be held at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas, March 9-13.

Not sure why anyone would call this challenging. UNT Dallas, ULL 16-15 (last year record), So. Illinois 12-19, North Dakota 19-13, Pepperdine 11-19, Samford 13-17, Montana St. 14-16, Texas A&M 9-20

3 SWAC teams: Grambling 10-20, Arkansas Pine Bluff 14-17, Alcorn St. 12-17

Scheduled one very challenging game, SFA 27-7

Not against scheduling for wins for a new coach, but cut the hyperbole; this is about as easy as it gets

      UNT ATHLETICS: Wilson and Jane Jones Donate $1 Million to Athletics Center Expansion Project Wilson Jones is 1985 UNT graduate DENTON, Texas – Wilson and Jane Jones have donated $1 million to UNT Athletics’ on-going fundraising efforts toward the Athletics Center expansion project, Vice President and Director of Athletics Jared Mosley announced Tuesday. This $1 million gift helped kick start UNT Athletics' fundraising campaign for the Athletics Center Expansion, which aims to enhance the student-athlete experience through a focus on holistic development both in the classroom and in competition. The expansion will provide state-of-the-art facilities designed to support student-athletes' physical, mental, and academic growth. "I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to Wilson and Jane Jones for their continued support of UNT,” Mosley said. “Their belief in the power of sports as a transformational tool has made an incredible impact on our student-athletes. “Through their generosity, they will help us Build Champions and Prepare Leaders long into the future. Their commitment to our mission inspires us every day, and we are proud to have them as partners in this journey. Thank you for believing in our vision and for making a lasting difference in the lives of our student-athletes." The Jones’ gift is the 11th of $1 million or more in UNT Athletics history. Wilson Jones is a 1985 UNT graduate. The family previously donated $5 million to UNT in 2022 to create The Wilson Jones Career Center in the G. Brint Ryan College of Business. He retired as CEO of Oshkosh Corporation in 2021. Jones led the company to a No. 8 ranking on Barron’s 100 Most Sustainable Companies list, a Glassdoor Employees’ Choice Award for being one of the best places to work, recognition as a Military Friendly Employer by Victory Media and one of Ethisphere Institute’s World’s Most Ethical Companies, as well as a spot as one of The Wall Street Journal's “Best Managed Companies” from 2017 to 2019. “As a proud graduate of UNT, I have seen firsthand the power of higher education and the role athletics plays in shaping the lives and futures of young leaders,” Jones said. “Jane and I are excited to contribute and support the Athletics Center Expansion campaign.       Great comment. I remember a few years back the coach at northwestern made a comment how one year he was Big ten coach of the year I believe and a year or two later he had a poor season and all of a sudden everybody said he could no longer coach. He turned around the next season and had a good one and also he could coach again. Lot of things going to having coaches be successful. Especially now when you can buy players it can make an average coach look really good and a good coach that can't afford the players going to look bad.

      What is this program missing?

      So in other words, you know I'm right and don't have anything intelligent to add. It's not my fault you'll most likely go your entire lifetime without ever seeing UNT win anything.
