It absolutely is. Having done some admissions work at several different levels, AAU>AAU Affiliate>Shanghai/ARWU>Carnegie>throwing all the universities in a washing machine>USNWR.

AAU is above Tier 1. Big 10 won't take any non-AAU schools.

Nebraska was AAU when they got into the Big 10 and its already been said that if they had lost it before admission, they would still be in the Big 12 right now.

For the academics here, how does one get AAU status? Do we have a shot at all ?

I think the only AAU universities in Texas are UT, A&M and Rice, no?

From the interwebs:

"Membership in the AAU is by invitation only and is based on an extensive set of quantitative indicators that describe the breadth and quality of a university’s research and education. AAU membership is a status coveted by major U.S. institutions because it is considered to be the pinnacle recognition of the stature of a research university. It’s a very exclusive club."

From my conversations with professors and administrators over the years, I believe the key component is research. It would be the apogee of a dream come true for me if North Texas received an invitation. Alas...

I found this article from 2016 about the differences between Tier 1 and AAU membership. The article was written back when OU was making noises about wanting to be in the B1G, but was being told no chance because their academics weren't high enough.

From what I've been able to gather from this and other sources, generating large amounts of peer reviewed research is one of two keys to getting into the AAU. The other is having a strong enough reputation for this research from the current members of the AAU, but generating the research is the more important of the two.

Did you know that authors are able to edit the titles of their own threads?
