Hearing PAC has a commitment from 4 AAC schools to leave the conference and join theirs. This could possibly create leverage to get the AAC to vote to dissolve the conference and get the majority of the schools to merge with the PAC

Getting that gut-wrenching feeling that the new league will take Mike A, and with the teams going, the ESPN contract will fall apart. I f'ing hate having this pessimistic feeling, but it seems every time we get a chance at a better conference, it craps out.

I said in another thread awhile back that this could happen, that Aresco would take a few schools and become commissioner of the new PAC. 
Anyone remember?

That would obviously be the worst case scenario. But I doubt they will get the AAC to dissolve the conference. Too many teams for whom that does not make sense. Not sure what kind of majority it would take to dissolve the conference, but I would be surprised if it was simple majority. I doubt FAU, Charlotte, ECU, UNT would even consider it, no matter what. The consequences would be too negative, and there is no way they get taken aloong. It will not be that cheap for all of those to get out.

My best guess is SMU is the ringleader on this cabal. As posted prior SMU, Memphis, UTSA, Tulane would in essence be the traitors on this deal.   Where would we be if they dismantle the conference?  Personally I would say the Sun Belt would be the best landing spot as we could replace UTSA with Texas State.  Any thoughts on this?

Ok so, what does SMU offer that UNT doesn’t? Is it the money? Because what I’m seeing is we are a Tier 1 research university and SMU is Tier 2. We are both in the same “Dallas” market, but we have a larger student body and alumni to put eyes on the screen for games and easily cover the attendance that SMU could offer. Also, I don’t see how this really helps the cost of travel for the west coast teams. I mean if you are flying to New Orleans to play Tulane, what’s another 1-1/2 to Miami?

With the exit fees the PAC gets and SMU backing you are talking a lot of money up front. This could supplement exit fees. They could cherry pick the AAC and later the MWC. Is Apple TV still in play?

There are no exit fees for the teams that announced they were leaving this year

Maybe. But they are gonna have to fight for that money. Because the PAC does not actually have any exit fees. In essence its not at all clear that they are even allowed to keep the money from this year that should be paid out next year. The schools who are leaving are going to want their piece of that. I bet some of them are going to have their lawyers fight for it too. Add the 50 million the PAC owes to comcast, and you are not actually in a situation where you can be sure you have all of that money to play with.

Also: are these PAC4 teams who are about to have to make budget cuts really gonna want to use any of that money to front exit fees for schools coming in? SMU might, I doubt wazzu wants to, Cal is running a huge deficit in its AD.

SMU has the money to play athletics, which we don't. In addition, we really are not in  Dallas or Ft. Worth markets. We are just an after though. I would doubt UTSA fits the PAC 4 profile, but SMU,Tulane, Rice certainly do.

If only four teams leave, things can continue moving forward; if they take 2-4 more, not so much. I would think this is being spearheaded (if true) by SMU and Memphis. SMU will do everything to keep us out (the ONLY reason they supported UNT getting into the American is because they believed they would be leaving). My biggest fears are that with even four teams going, the ESPN contract could be screwed up, and Mike A will be the new league commissioner.

The ACC is still in turmoil. There are more major changes still coming in realignment.

If you are any other team (including UNT) and you join a league with Stanford, Cal, and SMU, expect them to bolt when the ACC changes.

AAC needs 11 members to vote yes to dissolve. Or pay us your exit fee. Also, we should never again schedule smu in any sport if this were to happen.
