Looking back, I’m surprised this didn’t come up long ago.  The Peterbilt Super Pit ?  The Interstate Battery Coliseum ?  Easy money with very little wholesale cost.

Step right up !  How much am I bid ?

If you check CAD it’s all owned by the University and as @DentonLurker said, they could work through any hoops anyway.  Idk why we bogg ourselves down in the mud like this guys.  We can get shit done if we care to.

Nope.

It is officially an academic building.  Build a new arena and I'll be in favor of naming it.  As long as athletics pays rent, no thanks.

It's actually ran by an auxiliary organization to the university, a separate legal entity.

I know you are joking but there is a pretty extensive lists of places available for naming rights. Or at least there was. I can’t get the “Giving” page of MG Sports to load.

Did something change on that recently? I always thought that the full time employees at the Super Pit were university employees.

Same old tired argument, try to illustrate one time that the ownership of the SPit has created a problem.  Who do you think schedules the events and why would they do anything not in the best interest of NT athletics?

Who do you think NT basketball pays rent to?

Forgive me, but I have seen this same point made for decades and there has never been any rationale for concern.   If this was a problem, NT could just transfer the title to the athletic department, even maybe with funny money going from the athletic department to the school.

NT Athletics cannot paint a wall or drive a nail in the pit without approval from the academic side of the university. It is why the sound system has sucked for years and never gets any better.  It is why major renovations are extremely difficult.  Athletics has wanted a weight room for basketball in the Pit forever and finally got the university to let them have an old, unused racquetball court.  It is way too small, but better than what they had.

And yes, athletics has been bumped from using the pit.  It happened a few years ago when our womens basketball had to play a home game at TWU because the university had scheduled another event in the Pit and it was unavailable for basketball.  Academics gets first choice because it is their building.

A little history lesson may help here.  The Longhorns and Aggies built facilities with taxpayer money.  After that, the laws were changed so that no other schools could do the same.  To get around it, we built a "coliseum" and rent it to the athletic department at times for basketball.  It was built with taxpayer money, so it cannot just be transferred to athletics.

Ever wonder why the roof was brown for so long and didn't display any logo or name?  It is silver now and would be a perfect place for LED North Texas that could be seen for miles.  Wonder why athletics has not done that?  Nothing is done to that place for the benefit of athletics.

It is a tired argument because nothing has changed since we built it 50 years ago.

Geez, I'm impressed someone remembers the one time a athletic event was rescheduled.   A robotics convention was in the Spit and the girls' game was moved.  Of course, it would have probably been moved regardless of the technical ownership.

You are correct about the Spit being built with Texas funds, a loophole that existed at the time.  We will never know if it can be transferred to the athletic department because there is no reason to do so.

Academics gets first choice with the use of the Spit, that is a ridiculous statement.

Do you really think scheduling at UT, Texas St. or anywhere else is significantly different?  Athletic assets are used all the time for meetings for the public or for academic functions.
