Thanks for the write up!  Really good details.

Just based on the listed sizes of these guys, we're going to need a lot of guys rotating in to avoid getting worn down.  Teams that commit to the run are going to give us fits.

I believe that the third starting linebacking position will be a battle between C J Garnett, Chavez Brown, and Blake Fann.  Two of these (that do not make the first unit will likely be on the second unit with Carson Kropp.

Update:

I changed my tune.  I believe now that the top six linebackers are Jordan Brown, Kevin Wood, Ethan Wesloski, C J Garnett, Chavez Brown, and Blake Fann.  Should they decide to redshirt Fann then, though Matthew Moore is also a Freshman, would be the next in line.  I believe that Kropp, Van Zandt, and/or Leota will be on the special teams; possibly Brewer.  I believe that Kevin Wood is the only Senior so we should be in decent shape for the next few years.

You talking about Jaylin?  I thought he was primarily special teams.

He has been in the past. This new scheme has changed a lot of things. I think there will be multiple LB‘S play but each LB position is very different in terms of responsibilities and checks. They are not interchangeable. For example SLB will play in space most of the time vs a traditional SLB would be a box guy. Not in this scheme. Let’s all be patient and see how the new scheme plays out.

Gray, In all due respect I believe you are a little off base for multiple reasons. For example you don’t even mention Smith who has been taking #1 reps at SLB.

SAME FACE/NEW POSITION

A name that is new to the Linebacker room but not to the North Texas program is Jaylen Smith. Smith has played in 27 games the past two seasons for North Texas, mostly on special teams. But the new defensive staff moved Smith to linebacker from defensive back this past spring. He will add speed to the linebacking core. Smith, who is a Jr., goes a solid 5-11, 212. Smith could also be in line to break the 2-deep this fall at the SLB position and if he does remember you heard it here first.   If he does not, then I will not recall ever saying it.
