More info on the SDSU change of direction for the moment...

"The Mountain West had yet to receive any notice as of early Friday afternoon and has yet to comment."

"San Diego State's impending decision on Friday comes the day that the Pac-12's board of directors again met for an update on the league's television negotiations. Pac-12 commissioner George Kliavkoff gave a more detailed presentation to the Pac-12 board, but sources told ESPN's Heather Dinich on Friday that no deal is expected to be announced imminently."

SDSU in the AAC???  According to wiki their womens rowing team already competes in the AAC, while some of there other sports compete in other conferences.  For football and basketball, SDSU checks all the boxes for the AAC.  Big university in a major city is going to create media attention, adds a west coast time zone which will add flexibility for media scheduling, and certainly raise the profile of the AAC.  If SDSU is interested, then maybe UNLV comes along with them, and what a conference that would be

Too far out west?  How about Charlotte? 17 hours to Charlotte vs 22 hours to San Diego? SDSU far superior to Charlotte!  In a plane it’s 20 minutes!

Dude that's still 5 hours.

An army of less than 10 do these by flight.  The rest of us mere mortals are on the ground.

The problem is, that not expanding / having to change who they will expand with, will likely prolong media deal negotiations again. If you are a media company you want certainty in the contract about the product you will get in return for your money. Especially because it seems so uncertain. The narrative of getting a deal and then expanding is oversimplified. It is also possible that SDSU was gonna get a reduced deal. paying 34 million to only make 10-12 a year instead of 6 will take a long time to be worth it with fairly high risk considering the PAC instability. SDSU may have been slightly overplaying their hand, but the PAC is overplaying its hand massively.

Pac isn’t going to expand by 1.

That's also part of the problem.  They may need 2, 3, 6....depends on if more defections.  Also, who they want to invite is an issue.  Part wants fits for academics, part for just great athletics, hard to find fits for both criteria.

See, that's exactly how I see it.  Everything in the PAC is so tenuous and in such flux that I have no idea--and I doubt anyone else really knows--how many teams they'll end up adding.  But I would be very surprised if they don't end up adding at all, and it seems like these events with SDSU may have even bumped SMU to the very front of the queue.

UO and UW aren’t going to allow themselves to be seen playing at a half empty 30k stadium in Dallas. The Pac 12 is in the same situation that the Big 12 was years ago. Nothing is going to happen without approval of the two big dogs, and obviously they don’t want SDSU or SMU.

You do know that UO and UW are gone if and as soon as Big 10 invites come, right?

Hence the comparison to the Big 12.

The Big12 should just merge the remaining Pac12 into it to form their own Super Conference now.

That would allow for future attrition, cut off the ACC from forming one later, and it keeps Smut down!

Don't worry, our resident hooker murdering advocates will be here shortly to tell us that the deal to go and rescue the PAC 12 is already done, they are just waiting for the most recent Trump news to die down before Fox, CNN, and MSNBC can send all of their reporters to University Park to cover this national news story.
