TCU transfer Rondel Walker commits to North Texas

Former TCU guard Rondel Walker has committed to North Texas, he told On3.

The 6-foot-5 rising senior averaged 1.9 points, 1.6 rebounds, and 0.7 assists per game this past season for the Horned Frogs, who finished fifth in the Big 12 with an overall record of 22-13.

Walker began his college career at Oklahoma State, spending two seasons in Stillwater. He averaged 7.8 points and 2.9 rebounds during his freshman year at OSU followed up by 4.9 points and 2.6 rebounds during his sophomore season.

Walker, a native of Midwest City, Oklahoma, will now finish his college career at North Texas under replacement head coach Ross Hodge. The Mean Green are coming off a successful 2022-23 season where they won the NIT tournament, completing the year with a record of 31-7. Former UNT head coach Grant McCasland, who led the team to NIT champs, is now the head coach at Texas Tech.

Let's give Rondel a warm welcome.   I trust in the staff to make such a decision.  Overall team talent looks great on paper .. the Staff can judge social - team dynamics to gel and make it another great season.  Some people asked who Kai was and he turned out to be one of the best surprises in all of basketball.  

Welcome Rondel .. looking forward to a great season .. enjoy the ride.

huntsberry averaged 19 pts, 4 rb, and 4 assists before coming to north texas.  you can not compare the two players

It's a sad fact that many of our fans would rather bash players that come here and praise those that transfer out

The only concern I have is how do you find quality minutes for all the guards? There doesn't appear to be an appreciable difference in ability. Many seem to be interchangeable. No throw in the walk on and Christian Moore.

Transfers don't sign on to sit on the bench.  To keep everybody happy we'll certainly have to increase the pace from 64.5 ppg. Will be interesting for sure. Now if we can just add a Nickola Jokic with the last spot, I'll shut the hell up.

If Hodge can get him near his freshman numbers, at OSU in the toughest conference in the country, he'll be a great fit for us in the AAC.

This is as solid as it gets for a rotation guy.  A player that we can feel good about coming in, and providing depth.  possibly more.

If you don't want to get excited, you don't have to be.

Something tells me that if he replicates his production at TCU, he won't see the floor much.  If Hodge and staff can get him back to his OSU numbers then that is a great problem to have.

I wasn't speaking about any particular player but to the number of competent guards on the roster in general. It could become problematic when starters are out played by reserves in certain games. Who do you insert into the starting lineup the next game? Yes, good problem to have for the coach but again, kids feel that they should start and/or play more minutes. Just wanted to see an even distribution of scholarships for all positions/roles.

Ross has said he’s wanted to pick up the pace a bit. If we’re playing like we play on defense and running on offense, then we’ll need to have a deeper rotation.   This is what appears to be happening.  This is fantastic time to be a part of Mean Green Nation!

He is a former 4 star player.  Maybe there is something left in his tank for the right coach to draw out.  I know that the chances are minimal but if his style of play can be developed by coach Hodge he just might be a contributor.

      Per his agent Brett Tessler, the Colts are signing QB Jason Bean to a futures deal for the 2025 season. Bean, 25, played at North Texas before transferring to Kansas.       I don't see how it's an indictment at all. You bring a handful of guys hoping 1 or 2 end up being impact players for you. They're never all going to work out. That doesn't mean the evaluation was bad. It just means that one develops faster than the others and/or earns the job over the others. The fact that EM had another guy ready to go on short notice after CM left says a lot about his ability to evaluate and develop quarterbacks. Maybe even more so that he was a walk on who hadn't played since his freshman year of HS. Tough to argue EM isn't smarter than those other coaches in this particular situation, given the results he got out of DM in this game. And why not put the game in the hands of an inexperienced 18-year-old who comes in here and does what DM did? I'm glad they didn't go into their shell and play super conservative. I can't even imagine what the final score would have been if we had "leaned on the running game."
