Freeze ‘real excited’ about North Texas transfers

Auburn signed two transfers from North Texas this week in wide receiver Jyaire Shorter and linebacker Larry Nixon III. Both could potentially step in as starters this fall.

"Jyaire Shorter, I think, is a deep ball threat,” said AU coach Hugh Freeze. “He’s proven he can go get the ball. He gives us some length and catch radius that we need for what we want to do offensively.

"Larry Nixon is a tackling machine. He was either All-CUSA or led Conference USA in tackles. It was above 100. I think he’s a great addition to us also. We’re real excited about both of those guys.”

Shorter caught 23 passes for 628 yards and 11 touchdowns last season, averaging an FBS-best 27.2 yards per reception.

The 6-foot-2, 218-pound Shorter had four catches of more than 50 yards last season. Auburn’s receivers totaled just two in 2022, both by slot Ja’Varrius Johnson.

“I'd like to see that. I'll take that right now,” said Freeze of the explosive plays. “If we can get him 20 catches and 10 of them are touchdowns, that's pretty good. Hopefully we can get him more.

That depends. Is the escort company paying for NIL services or is it included as part of the NIL remuneration to the athletes?

I get what you are saying but my son has been a fan of Jyaire for 3-4 years now and we bought him a jersey last year that cost close to 200 bucks and he got it autographed by Jyaire at Rudy's as well.  How do I explain to my son that he can't cheer for his favorite player anymore?

I hope the both of them fail spectacularly as college football players for the rest of their careers, but go on to lead very happy and fulfilling lives outside of football.

It depends. As a Small Business person you have trained and invested time and resources because you see him growing the business and then he decides to move on, I would be upset.

When you watch a college football game do you just cheer for “both teams to have fun”?

I cheer for a certain team: North Texas. And if you are a player on my team, I cheer for you. If you aren’t, then I don’t. 

And I donate money to the MGSF to help these players develop at North Texas so they can compete and win at North Texas. Not so they can get faster and bulked up and experienced and then transfer to Auburn.

That pisses me off. And if it didn’t, what would be the point of following and cheering for a college football team anyway?  

It is one thing if a kid is here and can’t get on the field so he transfers. No hard feelings.

It is another if that kid is getting the opportunity here, takes advantage of our resources and goes and plays somewhere else.

You ever speculate if the ratings/evaluation systems we have were any better about identifying talent out of HS, that we would have never landed Shorter anyways?

For some reason I believe that playing in the SEC is a step up from playing in CUSA or the AAC. In addition, you probably are getting paid more money than you would get at North Texas, if any at all. College athletics, especially football, has become a job where the opportunity to play and be paid is a major consideration. A number of these young men don't come from homes with the financial means to have spending money for clothes, dates, etc. Being fairly compensated in today's college environment seems more than reasonable to me.

To belabor the metaphor, it’s not a better job, it’s the same job working for a competitor.

Nope.  I could be wrong, but I don’t think college recruiters go by what 24/7 sports has to say.  I figure it’s more likely that the ratings services see who’s recruiting a kid and they get rated accordingly.

It's a better job if you are paid more under the same or better working conditions against much better competition. While UNT and Auburn are in the business of football I doubt the Tigers consider us a competitor and won't until they start losing starters to us.

We just beat Wisconsin and Oklahoma State in men’s basketball. Were we “competing” against those schools?
Or should we have just rolled over and let them win because they are in a “P5” conference?

Football and Men’s basketball are worlds apart. Ask Kentucky and Kansas.

it is far easier for power teams to stockpile talent and keep it off of competing rosters in football than in basketball.

 

Also, in basketball we have a shot to win a national title if we win all of our NCAA tournament games. If we won every single football game all season long there is still close to zero chance they give us a shot at a national title.

So to sum up, we compete in basketball to a degree that we simply don’t have the opportunity to in football.

Honestly, we shouldn’t have to explain why Auburn is viewed as a better football coaching job than NT.
