I don't disagree, but not enough people care.  Besides, none of the following hit the same.

e-games
e-competitions
e-team stuff

This is not a generational thing, as far as I can tell.  Established events that are also called "sports" include golf and bowling.

I think of people participating in sports as putting forth some sort of physical effort. The folks on the ship in the movie “Wall-E” could play e-sports.
