Making the case for Jase Herl as CSU’s next head basketball coach

Since taking over as interim head coach on February 10, Herl has made the best of an extremely awkward situation and has impressed the Ram faithful with his swift action. Less than two weeks after getting the nod, Herl opened practices to the media and openly recruited the community to attend games to support the squad.

In his first game as head coach, CSU scored a season-high 90 points in a win over San Jose State. Three games after that, Herl helped CSU recover from a brutal home loss to Boise State with what was arguably the team’s best performance of the season in a  loss at Nevada on Feb. 25.

At 30 years old, Herl is far from the traditional hire, but he is considered one of the prominent young coaches on the rise. In April 2017, Herl was named to Under Armour’s 30-under-30 honorees, recognizing a group of up-and-coming young coaches in men’s college basketball.

More importantly, Herl has shown that he gets what it takes to be a successful young coach in this game. As a former college basketball player, Herl knows where these guys are coming from and can relate to them in ways that most will not be able to comprehend.

He has the recruiting connections to help build up the program right and the acumen to handle the stressful time periods.

Sure, he is incredibly young and would likely be considered a gamble. But the program could get him for a fraction of what they paid Larry Eustachy, and he could immediately bring some stability to a program that desperately needs it.

Thanks, I missed that. Since all 3 teams are hiring new staffs this fell between the cracks. ( or is it "my cracks"?)

So much change going on. It seems there are "Breaking News" headlines everywhere

      If we win out reg season we are in?

      Minnesota with a 3rd straight Quad 1 win. Our win in their house is looking better every game. Baring a collapse, Memphis is all but guaranteed a spot. Prior to their loss at Temple, some bracket experts had them as a 4 seed. They're 5-2 in Quad 1 games and 10-3 in Quad 1 and 2 with wins against Missouri, UConn, Michigan State, Clemson, Ole Miss, all of which are in the top 35 of NET. The resume is too strong unless they pretty much lose out. Cougar guy is wrong, though. Independent bracket experts with good track records of guessing the field still have UNT as being in contention. It's a longshot but not dead.

      TX State to the PAC 2?

      It’s interesting because I know the perception of the new PAC and AAC is that the PAC will be stronger, but where would Texas State rather go? It seems like AAC for a variety of reasons. I’m not convinced the new PAC is better than the AAC. UNLV and New Mexico holding back in the MWC, with the Northern Illinois and GCU ads have the future PAC in a bit of limbo. They have to keep performing or they will fall back fast. The SBC and AAC currently are the more stable forces, hence a certain level of power and leverage lives there. To me the PAC must break the bank to get Memphis or they are not going to lift on takeoff. GMG

      Rob Lanier, former SMU head coach, found out what the Infantry could do last February at Moody Coliseum. So when he moved over to Rice, inside sources suggest he slipped Tim Spaghetti some cash to make sure his home game against UNT would be on a weeknight this season. But I say, "Too bad, Rob! You can't escape us!" If you're in Houston, or are retired and can make the trip, or want to use a couple of half days like I did, join us at the terrible Tudor Fieldhouse on Tuesday, 2/11 at 8 p.m. The game has the later start because it'll be on ESPNU as the "west coast game." There are just under a hundred seats left behind our bench which would be group-rated at $25. For the second straight year I want to sell the section out. What'll make it better is the sea of green will be on national TV. It'll be different without Scott Screamin' Pera on the Rice bench, but we'll still have plenty to taunt Lanier about. Like how his son has to follow him around to maintain a D1 scholarship. And don't forget the UNT Dallas debacle. Here's what we did last year. We bought about 70 tickets, plus whatever the team was allotted, and the local alumni who bought on their own. If you are interested in joining our group for the game, message me. I've got pending communication out with the Houston alumni chapter to see if they will plan to do anything before the game like last year.       24/25 MBB Attendance Tracker

      12,400 announced at Providence today, who came into the game with a record of 9-10. Providence is about the same distance to Boston as Denton is to Dallas.
