Barrier to entry has changed the calculus. Memphis, Tulane, and USF do not have the financial resources to get access to the club. PAC would at least secure them access to the G5 spot in the playoff every year and likely a not insignificant bump in media revenue. When the AAC goes to market for its next TV deal its going to be terrible. Better to get out ahead of it with the PAC.
Memphis, Tulane, and USF have P4 aspirations. Moving to another G6 program with no media agreement doesn't get them to where they want to be. It looks like they will play the long game and see what happens with the ACC.
Yeah that was infuriating. In fairness, that particular play was classic football when you have a player like Brooks just running it down your throat. But you’re right, getting sucked in so hard (include the Safety in that as well) is hard to watch.
Best scenario = AAC adds Air Force, UNLV, Nevada, and TXST/New Mexico (I'd rather have TXST but New Mexico might make landing UNLV/Nevada easier). This would make the AAC the deepest and probably best G5 conference. It would also leave the Pac 12 with limited expansion options.
That argument didn't work for the 10 programs that left the PAC. The MWC is considered to still be viable and has 2 years to get to the required 8 schools. They could pick off UTEP and New Mexico State from CUSA where the reported buyout is only $800,000. Also the business community in Sacramento wants to build a new stadium for Sac. St. and move up to D1 joining the MWC. Seems like a pipe dream but as Sargent Clink used to say ," I know nothing."
