CHARLOTTE, N.C. (March 18, 2023) – Playing in a pair of contests in Charlotte, N.C., against No. 30 Charlotte and Rice, UNT was unable to grab a win as they fell 7-0 and 5-2 in a pair of contests over the weekend.

Kexuan Zhou and Matilde Morais both picked up strong singles victories in the contest versus Rice as UNT drops to 9-9 overall this season.

The Mean Green were shorthanded once again in both matches with just four healthy players, having to forfeit line three doubles as well as lines five and six singles.

“I could not be more proud of these ladies,” head coach Sujay Lama said “We have faced tremendous adversity, but these ladies have shown amazing resilience, character and heart. They keep battling and getting better each day and today Mati and Kexuan earned outstanding wins in singles and doubles. They continue to inspire their teammates with their effort and positivity.”

UNT started the weekend with a loss at the hands of the 49ers who came into the contest as the highest ranked C-USA team in the latest ITA rankings at No. 30.

After dropping the doubles point, Nformi Stadfany was nearly able to pick up a win at line three as she won the second set at line three 6-2, but was unable to grab the tiebreak, falling 10-4.

In the matchup with Rice, Morais and Zhou teamed up and started things off with a strong 7-6 victory at line one doubles.

UNT fell 6-2 at line two doubles, however, and forfeited line three as Rice took the doubles point.

At line one singles, Morais had a true back-and-forth affair as she won the first set 6-2 before falling in the second 6-0. In the 10-point tiebreak, Morais dominated to take the point 10-2 and win the match.

At line two, Zhou was dominant from the jump, winning in straight sets 6-0, 6-3 for her ninth win of the season.

The combination of Morais and Zhou is now 19-4 overall in singles matches this season.

UNT dropped the singles matches at lines three through six to fall to the Owls 5-2.

still no idea what's going on with only 4 players for 2 straight weeks now, o-5 in those matches.

Physical or viral issues for the missing players. Reason why Women's Tennis has 8 scholarships to help fill in the blanks, as well as trying to get a walk-on program with the tennis talent in the DFW and Texas Section.

**There are 8 on the roster, so 4 players have been missing for the past 2 weeks, including 3 of the Top 5.
