Nice article - Basic takeaways - They put time and effort in on the 5 and 4 stars and the upper 3 stars. Late bloomers have a much harder time getting a look.

247 tries to evaluate on NFL potential, not college potential.”
Rivals is also looking for future NFL stars in how it ranks high school players.

Camps play a big part - Both Rivals and 247Sports evaluate the campers for their NFL potential, not college potential, and treat it like a combine with the focus on size, speed and potential development.

If they are ranking them on their pro potential they are missing the mark.  That's virtually impossible since such a small percentage eventually go to the NFL.  An extremely small percentage below Division 5-2 will make it to the pros.  However, some in the lower classes will do very well in college.

I think that they base their grade on size, speed, high school results (especially the skill positions) and who offers.

They left out that they also factor in who each prospect signs with.

Not to mention with Rivals specifically, do we have a dedicated person on our staff to rate these guys?

Rivals and On3 seem to be a little more accurate, but with rivals, if you don't have a dedicated writer, they're all low 2 star guys.

Just look at us vs UTSA. They have a dedicated guy and we don't, and somehow all their recruits are automatic 3 star while our guys aren't. It's half assed, and I can see why they're being passed up compared to the others.

Stars do matter but they aren't everything. A 5 star recruit is not guaranteed to make the NFL, but most of them do.

Big Ed is considered to be the 127th greatest high school football player of all time, the #2 overall recruit in Texas that year and the #3 defensive tackle in the country and was one of the best players we've had in school history. I told this story before, when he first got to Fall Camp, he was on the 2nd team defense. Halfway through the 1st practice, he was a starter and the rest of course is history.

So while there are outliers like Patrick Mahomes and JJ Watt, most of the time the star system gets it right.

That may factor into their “NFL potential” rating since we now know they aren’t grading on college potential.

The issue is not their "getting it right" with 4/8 stars and the upper 3's. The problem is the lack of effort given to provide decent ratings to most G5 signees.

That is likely because they see little NFL potential in those players based on the description of how they rate players you posted to start the thread.
