Are these new?  Seems like it would be common practice to have open walk on tryouts.

These used to be more common.  I think Hayden Fry held them.  It's an easy way to perhaps find an overlooked player.

Penn State found Chad Powers at their walk on tryout....

I remember during the Dodge years they had walk on tryouts. A couple of guys that I know participated and 1 actually made the team.

McCarney found some good players via walk-on. Might've been a necessity since his actual recruiting was horrendously bad, but still a nice thing to see.
